ST.

ROSE
Of
LIMA
Saint Rose of Lima,
was a Spanish
colonist in Lima,
Peru, who became
known for both her
life of severe
asceticism
and her care of
the needy of the
city through her
own private
efforts.
A lay member of the
Dominican Order,
she was the first
person born in the
Americas to be
canonized by the
Catholic Church.
She was born Isabel
Flores y de Oliva in the
city of Lima on April
20, 1586. Her nickname
"Rose" comes from an
incident in her
babyhood
when a servant
claimed to have seen
her face transform
into a rose. On her
confirmation in 1597
she formally took the
name of Rose.
As a young girl she
began to fast three
times a week and
performed severe
penances in secret.
When she was admired
for her beauty,
Rose cut off her hair
and smeared pepper
on her face. She
rejected all suitors
and despite the
censure of her
parents,
she spent many hours
contemplating the
Blessed Sacrament,
which she received
daily, an extremely
rare practice in that
period.
She was determined
to take a vow of
single blessedness
which was opposed
by her parents, who
wished her to marry.
After daily fasting,
she took to
permanently abstain
from eating meat.
She helped the sick
and hungry around
her community,
bringing them to her
room and taking care
of them. Rose sold
her fine needlework,
and took flowers that
she grew to market,
to help her family.
She made and sold
lace and embroidery
to care for the poor,
and she prayed and
did penance in a
little grotto which
she had built.
She wanted to become
a nun, but her father
forbade it, so she
instead entered the
Third Order of St.
Dominic while living
in her parents' home.
In her twentieth year she
donned the habit of a
tertiary and took a vow
of perpetual virginity.
She donned a heavy
crown made of silver,
with small spikes on the
inside,
in emulation of the Crown
of Thorns worn by
Christ. For eleven years
she lived this way and
died on August 24, 1617,
at the age of 31. It is said
that she prophesied the
date of her death.

Rose was beatified by
Pope Clement IX on
May 10, 1667, and
canonized on April 12,
1671, by Pope Clement
X, the first Catholic in
the Americas to be
declared a saint.
Saint Rose is the
patroness of the
Americas,
indigenous people of
the Americas
especially of Lima,
Peru;
the secondary
patroness of the
Philippines along with
Saint Pudentiana; and
she is also the
Patroness of
gardeners and
florists.

Word of the Day:
LISTENING
- is to pay attention;
heed; obey (often
followed by to)
Children must
always listen to
their parents at all
times because the
parents know what
is best for them.
In the same way,
children must listen
during the mass as
Jesus is the one
talking in the
person of the
priest.

To listen to the
word of God is
to have faith in
Him.

When we listen, we
open our hearts to
Jesus immense
Love for us.
To listen to God is to
make Him the center
of our lives and God
is the best listener as
He hears even the
silent prayer of a
sincere heart.

St. Clare was born
in Assisi in 1133
into a wealthy
noble family. As a
child, she was
devoted to prayer.
When she turned 12
her parents wanted
her to marry a young
and wealthy man,
but she preferred to
wait until she was
18.
However, at the age
of 18 she heard St.
Francis's
preachings which
would subsequently
change her life.
St. Francis told her that
she was chosen by
God. Soon after, on
Palm Sunday, when
people went to collect
palm branches, she
stayed home.
That night she ran
away to follow St.
Francis. St. Francis
cut her hair and
dressed her in a
black tunic and a
thick black veil.
Clare was placed in the
convent of the
Benedictine nuns near
Bastia from where her
father made several
unsuccessful attempts to
abduct her, still wanting
her to get married.
Later Clare, now joined
by her sister St. Agnes
as well as her mother,
moved in a place
close to the church of
San Damiano, which
St. Francis had
rebuilt.
Other women joined
them and San
Damiano became
known for its radical
austere lifestyle. The
women were at first
known as the "Poor
Ladies".
San Damiano emerged
as the most important
house in the order,
and Clare became its
undisputed leader
accepting the role of
abbess of San
Damiano.
Clare sought to imitate
St. Francis' virtues
and way of life so
much so that she was
sometimes titled,
alter Franciscus, or
another Francis.
She also played a
significant role in
encouraging and
aiding St.Francis,
whom she saw as a
spiritual father
figure,
and she took care of
him during his
illnesses at the end
of his life, until his
death in 1226.
Later the order
became known as
The Order of St.
Claire. Their
practices were very
austere, marked by
absolute poverty.
They slept on the
ground, wore no
shoes or sandals,
never ate meat, and
remained silent
unless spoken to or
in order to perform a
work of charity.
Their daily duties
included caring for
the poor and
neglected, begging
for alms, and
performing their
chores.
Clare was also the
servant to her nuns.
Her life remained
simple, but she
became internationally
famous for her
sanctity.
She died in 1253,
and was canonized
a saint only two
years later. Her
Feast day is
celebrated on the
11
th
day of August.

Vianney was born May 8,
1786, in Dardilly, a
village near Lyons,
France. Although a poor
student, who found it
difficult to learn Latin
and theology, he was
ordained a priest.
He built chapels,
homes for destitute
children and
friendless women,
and provided for
the poor.
He did not have a penny
in the world, yet he
regularly maintained
more than 100 poor
women and children,
for help always seemed
to come in answer to
his prayer.
Persons afflicted with
disease soon began to
experience sudden
cures while praying
before the altar or
making confessions to
the parish priest.
Pilgrims of more than
20,000 persons came
annually from
Germany, Italy,
Belgium, all parts of
France, and even from
England to be cured
by him.
His church was open
day and night, and
immense crowds
waited for hours and
days. His powers of
clairvoyance developed
to such a degree
it was reported that by
walking in the crowd
he could tell the
names, connections,
and circumstances of
the patients as soon as
he cast his eye upon
them.
For 35 years he was
persecuted by
violent poltergeist
disturbances. Loud
knocks resounded
at the gate,
a storm of blows
descended upon the
furniture, and
sometimes there were
sounds as if a wild
horse were rearing in
the hall below his
room,
striking the ceiling with
its hoofs and stamping
with all four feet on the
tiled floor. At other
times a great flock of
sheep appeared to be
passing above his head,
or a gendarme seemed
to be ascending the
stairs in heavy boots.
He always expected
these disturbances
when someone was on
his way
to seek consolation
from him and
attributed it to the
envy of the demons
for the good he was
going to do.
Vianney died on August
4, 1859 in Ars, France.
He was the subject of a
papal process
beginning in 1862, as a
result of which he was
declared venerable in
1872,
blessed in 1905,
canonized in 1925,
and declared
heavenly patron
for all parish
priests in 1929.
He is the Patron
Saint of Priests and
the church
celebrates his feast
day every 4th of
August, the day he
died.
Iigo Lopez de Oaz
y Loyola, whom we
know as St. Ignatius,
was born in the
Basque country of
northeastern Spain
in 1491.
His mother died
when he was a
child, while his
father died when
he was 16.
One of his brothers
went on the second
voyage of Columbus
and another died in a
battle. Iigo was the
youngest of 13
children.
Iigo was raised to
be a courtier and
diplomat in
service to the
crown. He also
spent some time
as a page at court.
He became a soldier
and fought the
French in the Battle
of Pamplona where
his leg was shattered
by a cannonball.

Because of his
damaged leg, Iigo
limped for the rest of
his life. While
recovering he read the
Illustrated Life of
Christ and a book of
saints legends.

Gradually he began to
reflect on his
experiences and from it
he realized God was
leading him by his
feelings, drawing him
toward an entirely new
way of life.
Iigo traveled to
Jerusalem so that
he could "kiss the
earth where our
Lord had walked.
He gave away his fine
clothes to a poor
man, and hung up his
sword and dagger.
Effectively, his old
life was over and his
new life had begun.

St. Ignatius studied
theology
and Latin in
the University of
Alcal in Spain and
then in Paris.
He and a few followers
bound themselves by
vows of poverty,
chastity, and obedience.
In 1539, they formed the
Society of Jesus (Jesuits)
which was approved in
1540 by Pope Paul III.
He died in July 1556,
was beatified by Pop
e Paul V in 1609 and
canonized by Pope
Gregory XV in 1622.
He was declared
patron of all spiritual
retreats by Pope Pius
XI in 1922.
St.Ignatius' feast day
is celebrated on July
31.
He is a foremost
patron saint of
soldiers, the Society
of Jesus, the Basque
Country, and the
provinces
of Gipuzkoa and Bisc
ay in Spain.

ST. BRIDGET
(Birgitta)
of Sweden
Feast Day:
July 23

Patron Saint
of Europe
The most celebrated
saint of Sweden
was the daughter of
the knight,
governor and law
speaker of
Uppland,
and one of the richest
landowners of the
country and through
her mother, Bridget
or Birgitta was
related to the
Swedish kings of her
era.

At the age of 14,
she married Ulf
Gudmarsson, to
whom she bore
eight children, four
daughters and four
sons.
Six survived
infancy, which was
rare at that time.
One daughter is
now honored as St.
Catherine of
Sweden.
Bridget became
known for her works
of charity,
particularly toward
stergtland's
unwed mothers and
their children.
When she was in her
early thirties, she
was summoned to be
lady-in-waiting to the
new Queen of
Sweden, Blanche of
Namur.
In 1341 she and her
husband went on
pilgrimage to Santiago
de Compostela and
shortly after their
return in 1344, her
husband died.
After this loss,
Birgitta became a
member of the Third
Order of St. Francis
and devoted herself
wholly to a life of
prayer and caring for
the poor and the sick.
It was about this time
that she developed
the idea of
establishing the
religious community
which was to become
the Order of the Most
Holy Saviour.
The Order were
double monasteries,
with both men and
women forming a
joint community,
though with separate
cloisters.
In 1350, a year of
jubilee, Bridget braved a
plague-stricken Europe
to make a pilgrimage to
Rome accompanied by
her daughter, Catherine,
and a small party of
priests and disciples.
This was done partly to
obtain from the Pope
the authorization of
the new Order and
partly in pursuance of
her self-imposed
mission to elevate the
moral tone of the age.
In her pilgrimages to
Rome, Jerusalem and
Bethlehem, she sent
"back precise
instructions for the
construction of the
monastery" now known
as Blue Church,
insisting that an
"abbess, signifying
the Virgin Mary,
should preside
over both nuns
and monks.
As a child, she had already
believed herself to have
visions; and these became
more frequent later in the
years to come. She
appealed to the kings of
Europe for peace and the
restoration of papacy to
Rome.

Although she never
returned to Sweden,
her years in Rome were
far from happy, being
hounded by debts and
by opposition to her
work against Church
abuses.
She was originally
buried at San
Lorenzo in
Panisperna before
her remains were
returned to Sweden.
She was canonized
in the year 1391 by
Pope Boniface IX,
which was
confirmed by the
Council of
Constance in 1415.
Because of new
discussions about
her works, the
Council of Basel
confirmed the
orthodoxy of the
revelations in 1436.

In October 1999,
Pope John Paul II
named St Bridget as a
patron saint of
Europe. Her feast day
is celebrated on 23
July, the day of her
death.

ST. FREDERICK,
Bishop of Utrecht

Feast Day:
July 18
Patron Saint of
the deaf
Frederick I was
Bishop of Utrecht
between 815/816
and 834/838, and is
a saint of the Roman
Catholic Church.

Frederick was
born around 780
in Friesland and
was a grandson of
the Frisian King
Radboud.
At a young age he
was taught at Utrecht
by the clergy, including
Bishop Ricfried. After
completing his studies
he was ordained priest

and put in charge of
converting the
remaining heathens
in the northern areas
of the diocese, but
also in areas outside
of the diocese.
It is known that he
preached at Walcheren
and together with St.
Odulfus in Stavoren
and its surroundings.
After the death of
Bishop Ricfried in
815/816, Frederick was
chosen as Bishop of
Utrecht. He was known
for his piety and
erudition.
He maintained a
correspondence with
Rabanus Maurus. He was
praised for his knowledge
and understanding during
the synod of Mainz in
829. The hagiographyVita
S. Bonifacii has been
attributed to him.

It is unclear exactly
how Frederick came
to an end. It has been
established that he
was murdered, but by
whom and why is
unclear.

The story goes on
that, on July 18, 838,
after St. Frederick had
celebrated Mass and
was about to make his
thanksgiving, he was
stabbed by two
assassins.
He died in a few
minutes, reciting
that verse of Psalm
144, "I will praise
the Lord in the land
of the living".
The eleventh century
author of his life says that
these assassins were
employed by the Empress
Judith, who could not
pardon the liberty he had
taken to reprove her sins,
and was incited thereto by
her husband.
According to the 11th
and 12th century
writers, the killers were
hired by Empress
Judith, because of
Frederick's regular
criticism of her
dissolute way of life.
Later other writers
wrote that the inhabitants
of Walcheren, who were
hostile to Christianity,
sent them as a response
to Frederick's preaching
there.
Frederick composed a
prayer to the Blessed Trinity
which for many ages was
used in the Netherlands. The
reputation of his sanctity
appears from a poem of
Rabanus Maurus, his
contemporary, in praise of
his virtues.

Shortly after his death,
Frederick was canonized.
His feast day is 18 July
and he is the patron saint
of the deaf. He was buried
in St. Salvator's Church in
Utrecht, The Netherlands.

For our sake he was
crucified under Pontius

I love the Lord, He is filled
with compassion.
He turned to me on the day
that I called.
From the snares of the dark,
O, Lord, save my life,
be my strength.

Gracious is the Lord, and
just.
Our God is mercy, rest to
the weary.
Return my soul to the Lord
our God who bids tears
away.
I love the Lord.
REFRAIN
I love the Lord, He is filled
with compassion.
He turned to me on the day
that I called.
From the snares of the dark,
O, Lord, save my life,
be my strength.

How can I repay the
Lord for all the goodness
He has shown me?
I will raise the cup of
salvation and call on His
name.
I love the Lord.
REFRAIN
I love the Lord, He is filled
with compassion.
He turned to me on the day
that I called.
From the snares of the dark,
O, Lord, save my life,
be my strength.

I shall live my vows to
You before Your people,
I am Your servant.
I will offer You my
sacrifice of praise and of
pray'r.
I love the Lord.

REFRAIN
I love the Lord, He is filled
with compassion.
He turned to me on the day
that I called.
From the snares of the dark,
O, Lord, save my life,
be my strength.

The Concluding Rites

PRIEST: The Lord be
with you.
ALL: And with your
spirit.

TIME TO CHANGE
Its time for us to make our
dreams come true
Our guiding voice will tell us
what to do
Its the time to change ourselves
and show the world
That we still care for us
And well lead them there.

Well lead them to a place
beyond the sea
A place of love where
everyone is free
Dont despair our path to
happiness is why
If we must change our ways
Call on God for our guide.

REFRAIN:
Though many times I run
from You in shame
I lift my hands and call upon
Your name
For underneath the shadow
of Your wings
My melody is You

O Lord, I seek You for I thirst
Your mercy is the rain on the
desert of my soul

O Lord, I raise my lifeless
eyes and see Your glory shine
How Your kindness overflows
REFRAIN:
Though many times I run
from You in shame
I lift my hands and call upon
Your name
For underneath the shadow
of Your wings
My melody is You

O Lord, Your sanctuary
calls
I yearn to be with You
in the rivers of Your
love
REFRAIN:
Though many times I run
from You in shame
I lift my hands and call upon
Your name
For underneath the shadow
of Your wings
My melody is You

(MELODY)
To see the face of God is my
heart's desire
To gaze upon the Lord is my one
desire

(COUNTERPOINT)
For God so loved the world
He gave His Son, His only
begotten Son

REFRAIN:
We hold the death of
the Lord deep in our
hearts.
Living, now we remain
with Jesus the Christ
Once we were people
afraid, lost in the
night.
Then by Your cross we
were saved;
Dead became living,
life from Your giving.
REFRAIN:
We hold the death of
the Lord deep in our
hearts.
Living, now we remain
with Jesus the Christ
Something which we
have known,
Something weve
touched,
What we have seen with
our eyes;
This we have heard; life-
giving Word.
He chose to give of
Himself, became our
bread.
Broken, that we might
live
Love beyond love, pain
for our pain
We are the presence of
God; this is our call.
Now to become bread
and wine:
Food for the hungry,
life for the weary,
For to live with the
Lord, we must die
with the Lord

In ominibus amare
In omnibus servire
In omnibus amare et
servire Domino
In everything love and
serve the Lord.
One thing I ask;
to dwell in the house of
the Lord
all my days
To gaze on His goodness
and walk in His ways
He will shelter me;
He will be my strength.
In the triumph that He brings me,
I can hold my head high
In His house I shall lift up my
voice
I will sing, I will praise the Lord
TINAPAY NG BUHAY

Binasbasan, hinati't inialay
Buhay na ganap ang sa ami'y

Nawa'y matulad sa pag-

Buhay na laan nang lubos

He gave us His only

Jesus Christ our Savior
His most precious one

He has sent us His

And sends those who

To bring the message
to everyone
In a voice loud and

Let us tell the world of
His love
The greatest love the
world has known
Search the world for
those who have walked
Astray and lead them
home

Fill the world's darkest
corners
With His light from up
above
Walk every step, Every
mile, Every road
And tell the world, Tell
the world of His love
