This document defines and describes various visual elements used in architecture. It discusses points, lines, planes, shapes, forms and volumes. Points mark positions in space and intersections of lines. Lines define edges, join elements, and articulate surfaces. Linear elements like columns establish structure. Planes such as walls and ceilings enclose space. Shapes are two-dimensional extensions of lines. Forms are three-dimensional volumes defined by boundaries between planes.

centre of field point generated linear elements and forms Line definition edges of shape or plane join, link or support other visual elements articulate the surface of plane character orientation Linear elements vertical liner elements-columns and towers functions transparent volume of space Lines to plane . Shape define circle, triangle , square Plane define properties of planes and spatial relationships base plane elevated base plane depressed base plane wall plane = exterior and interior overhead plane Form define visual properties Volume define Point has no dimension, static and directionless
POINT ELEMENTS:- Marks a position in space Serves to mark the two ends of a line Intersection of two lines Centre of field Point projected in linear form a column or tower Other point generated forms- circle, cylinder, sphere Point when extended becomes a 1d line Serve to join, link, support, surround or intersect other visual elements Describe the edges of given shape or plane Articulate the surface of planes Character of line-determined by its length:width ratio and degree of continuity ORIENTATIONS = Vertical line - Horizontal line - Inclined line
LINEAR ELEMENTS:- Vertical linear elements establish particular points in space Express movement across planes Provide support Form a 3d structural frame for architectural space Cantilevered member Define a transparent volume of space Can be imaginary in space along which elements are symmetrically arranged Two parallel lines can visually describe a plane Outline of plane figure or surface configuration of a volumetric form in architecture RELATES TO :- floor wall ceiling planes that enclose space Door and window openings Contours of building forms, etc. PRIMARY SHAPES: Circle, Square and Triangle. 2 dimensional, extension of a line Shape is the primary identifying characteristic of a plane Properties: colour, texture and pattern
PLANAR ELEMENTS:- Define 3d mass or volume Size, shape, colour ,texture and spatial relationships with one another determines the quality of space they enclose BASE PLANE ground or building base figured out With perceptible change in colour and texture Edge definition Surface articulation eg: carpet, lawn Elevated base plane- creates domain in a continuous base plane Depressed base plane isolates from base plane Both could have characteristics of base plane or be made distinct WALL PLANE: Exterior- isolates portion of space, privacy and protection from climatic elements Design the image of the building Interior- governs size and shape of internal spaces (rooms),barriers but punctures and openings provided
OVERHEAD PLANE: Roof plane & Ceiling plane Defines field of space it encloses by size, shape and height Shelters interior space from climatic elements Impacts overall building shape Extend as overhangs to shield the openings External outline, appearance, and internal structure Includes 3d mass or volume Shape is the principle aspect by which we identify and categorize forms
Visual properties: size, colour, texture, position, orientation, visual interior, observers point of view Extension of a plane- 3d Form is the identifying characteristic of volume Established by shapes and interrelationships of planes that defines its boundaries
