Horror poster analysis

Christelle Elwin
The colour red used on the word House to
represent blood indicating that murder could
be happening in the house in the film itself.
The synergy used for this poster is white red
and black. The general colour of the poster is
black with dark clouds surrounding this one
house on the hill in the middle showing that the
house is in darkness and promiscuity making it
more likely to appear frightening as was the
intention because it is a scary film.
The date of the film release is in red to give it
importance and attract the eye of the viewer
almost right away.
The trees surrounding the house in the picture
appear almost bare, almost as if they are made
to resemble arms reaching from the earth to
signify that there has been death before in the
house or around it and their spirits are yearning
to be released.
The title of the poster matches the image on
the poster as the only house in frame seems
isolated and distant from the rest.
The film seems to be set in an older time period,
however not so long ago. This is shown through
the use of the slight sepia tone used to filter the
image and the use of simple typography.
The drooping tree with no leaves, with fallen
leaves around the tree and the mist in the
picture used for the poster gives the image a
cold element, which may have been done
intentionally because ghosts reportedly make
people feel cold.
Above the title of the poster The Conjuring
both popular horror films (Saw and Insidious) are
said to have been created by the director of this
film the poster is advertising.
A shadow is seen just underneath the noose
hanging from the tree. This shows the film may
be to do with ghosts.
The clouds seem to be hanging low and are
dark like its going to rain.
The typography the poster uses is quite jagged
as if to insinuate the jagged edge of a knife, and
a knife is normally related to the horror genre as
a main weapon used. The word Monster is in
red as if to say the monster will be the one
causing blood shed in this film.
The image used on this poster for this film
Morningside Monster appears to have a dark
filter but wants the viewer to focus on the face
in the centre of the shot because that is the only
clearly visible part of the picture especially the
teeth, which are jagged relating to the main
typography the poster uses.
Only the head of the monster is visible on this
poster. This may be because there is writing in
red at the foot of the poster that says Theres a
monster inside everyone. Therefore the
darkness surrounding the monsters head could
represent the walls of a stomach as though us,
the viewer, could metaphorically give birth to a
monster anytime because there is a monster in
all of us. This metaphor is further strengthened
due to the monster having its eyes closed like an
embryo or new born.
