Travelling to Australia


All travelers, except New Zealand citizens, must obtain
a visa or travel authority before travelling to Australia.
- Visitors
- Workers
- Migrants
- Students

Tourists
For people to visit Australia for a holiday, sightseeing, social
or recreational reasons, to visit relatives, friends or for
other short-term non-work purposes.
There are a number of visas available for people to visit
Australia as a tourist.
Electronic Travel Authority (Subclass 601)
An electronically stored authority for short-term visits to
Australia for tourism or business purposes of up to 3
months.
eVisitors (Subclass 651)
An electronically stored authority for visits to Australia for
tourism or business purposes for up to 3 months.
Visitor Visa (Subclass 600)
A temporary visa allowing a stay in Australia of up to 3 or 6
or 12 months.
The Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) (subclass 601)
lets you enter Australia as many times as you want for
up to 12 months if you are:
- a tourist
- travelling for business purposes.
You can stay in Australia for up to three months on
each visit.
The ETA is an electronically stored authority for travel
to Australia. You must be outside Australia when you
apply and when the ETA is granted.
An ETA is linked electronically to passport. It can be
seen by staff at airlines, travel agencies and Australian
border agencies.

Your ETA lets you enter Australia for up to three
months at a time as a tourist or for business purposes.
Business activities include:
- making general business or employment enquiries
- investigating, negotiating, signing or reviewing a
business contract
- carrying out activities as part of an official
government-to-government visit
- participating in conferences, trade fairs or seminars, as
long as you are not being paid by the organizers for
your participation.

eVisitor is for people who want to visit Australia for:
tourism, such as holidays, recreation or seeing family
or friends
business purposes, such as attending a conference,
negotiating or exploring business opportunities.
You must hold a passport from an eligible country to
apply for this visa.
You must be outside Australia when you lodge your
application for an eVisitor. You do not need to visit an
immigration office and you will not receive a stamp or
label in your passport. However, you will be given a
confirmation for your records.
An eVisitor is an electronically stored authority for
travel to Australia. eVisitor can be accessed by airlines,
travel agents and Australian border agencies.

The Visitor visa (subclass 600) is for people who want
to travel Australia as tourists, for business or to visit
family. It is a temporary visa.
This visa has four streams:
Tourist stream: for people travelling to Australia for a
holiday, recreation or to visit family and friends.
Business Visitor stream: for business people
travelling to Australia for a short business visit. This
includes making a general business or employment
enquiry, negotiations or participating in a conference
Sponsored Family stream: for people travelling to
Australia to visit their family. You must have
a sponsor who might be asked to provide a bond.
Working Holiday

The Working Holiday and Work and Holiday programs
encourage cultural exchange and closer ties between
arrangement countries by allowing young people to have an
extended holiday supplemented by short-term
employment.
Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417)
For people from Belgium, Canada, Republic of Cyprus,
Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong,
Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malta,
Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan and United
Kingdom.
Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462)
Information for applicants from Argentina, Bangladesh,
Chile, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, the USA
and Uruguay, on holiday and work visas in Australia.

Retirement

For retirees who are 55 years of age and over who want
to spend their retirement years in Australia.
Retirement Visa (Subclass 410)
Only available to people who currently hold this visa
(and their partners), or to former Retirement visa
holders (and their partners) who have not held
another substantive visa since their last Retirement
visa was granted.
Investor Retirement Visa (Subclass 405)
A temporary visa for people aged 55 years or older who
are able to make a significant long term financial
investment in Australia. This visa is not a pathway to a
permanent visa.

Medical Treatment

For people to travel to Australia for medical treatment
for up to 12 months.
Medical Treatment Visa (Subclass 602)
For people to travel to, or remain in, Australia for
medical treatment or medical consultations for a
period of up to three months

Transiting through Australia

Transit without visa arrangements
Non-Australian citizens from certain countries are
eligible to transit through Australia without a visa.
Transit visa (subclass 771)
If you do not qualify for transit without a visa, you will
need to apply for a Transit visa which is free of charge.

Event Organizers and Participants
are organizing an international event, conference or
meeting in Australia
have been invited to speak at, perform in, compete in,
or attend an international event, conference or meeting in
Australia.
business or academic meetings, conferences and seminars
sporting tournaments, championships and games
trade shows, expos and fairs
cultural festivals
religious events.


Employer Sponsored Workers

For lawfully operating Australian and overseas employers to
sponsor and employ skilled workers who have recognized
qualifications and skills/or experience in particular
occupations required in Australia.
Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457)
A program for employers to sponsor approved skilled
workers to work in Australia on a temporary visa.
Employers can nominate a number of positions for
different occupations under the same sponsorship
application.
Labor Agreements
Formal arrangements for an Australian industry group or
employer to recruit a specified number of skilled workers
on a temporary or permanent basis over a number of years.

Temporary Work (Skilled) visa
This visa allows you to:
work in Australia for up to four years
bring your family to work or study in Australia
travel in and out of Australia as often as you want.

This is a sponsored visa. Before you can apply for the
visa, your employer must:
become an approved sponsor
nominate you for a position.


VISA Applicants
Approved occupations
You must work in a skilled occupation that has been
approved by the Australian Government.
Skill requirements
You need to show that you have the skills and
experience necessary to work in the nominated
occupation.
If your nominated occupation is a trade occupation,
you might need to do a skills assessment.

Registration and licensing
If requested by your visa processing case officer, you must
provide evidence from the relevant Australian registration
or licensing authority that you hold, or will be able to meet,
the registration or licensing requirements to work in your
nominated occupation.
English language requirements
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
and the Occupational English Test (OET)
If you are sponsored by a standard business sponsor, you
must show that you have English language proficiency that
is equivalent to:
an International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
test score of at least 5 in each of the four test components
of speaking, reading, writing and listening, or
a score of at least 'B' in each of the four components of an
Occupational English Test (OET).

Health requirements
The health examinations you need will depend on your
circumstances and where you have lived. The results of
your health examinations are valid for 12 months.
Health insurance
You are responsible for all your health costs in Australia.
You will not be covered by Australia's national health
scheme (Medicare) while you hold this visa
You must have adequate health insurance in Australia. You
should ensure that your insurance will provide at least the
level of coverage required for the purpose of your stay. Your
health insurer could be in either Australia or your home
country.
Character requirements
You must be prepared to provide a police certificate from
each country you have lived in for 12 months or more.


Including family in your application
You can include the following people in your visa application:
your partner (married)
your or your partners dependent children
other dependent relatives.
The application must include documentary evidence of
their relationship to you.
Your family members must also be able to show that they
meet Australia's health and character requirements.
They must be able to show they have the same levels of
health insurance as you.
Your sponsor must agree in writing to include your family
members as secondary sponsored persons. They can do this
by including the details of your family members in the
nomination application, or by providing this information
in a letter to be attached to your visa application.

How to apply:
Prepare your documents
You need to provide documents to prove the claims you
make in the application.
Some of the documents could take some time to obtain.
You should have them ready when you lodge your
application to reduce any delays in processing.

Online Applications
You must provide all relevant documents and pay the visa
application charge by credit card when you apply.

Upload your documents through website when
you lodge your online application.
If you cannot upload your documents, you can
scan them and email them as PDF files to the case
officer. You will be given the name and contact
details of your allocated case officer after you have
lodged your application.
When you apply online, you will be given a
transaction reference number (TRN). Keep a
record of the number so you can check the status
of your application.

Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) lets you live
and work in Australia temporarily after you have
finished your studies.
This visa has two streams:
Graduate Work stream for international students
who graduate with skills and qualifications that relate
to an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL
Post-Study Work stream for international students
who graduate with an eligible qualification. This
stream is only available to students who applied for
and were granted their first Student visa to Australia. A
visa in this stream can be granted for up to four years,
depending on the qualification.

Sponsored Training
Training and Research Visa (Subclass 402)
Allows you to come to Australia on a temporary basis to
undertake occupational training, conduct or observe
research as a visiting academic or participate in a
professional development program.
Professional Development Visa (Subclass 470)
Allows sponsored foreign nationals who are professionals,
managers or government officials, to undertake
professional development training programs in Australia
for periods of up to 18 months.
Occupational Trainee Visa (Subclass 442)
Allows foreign nationals to undertake a supervised,
workplace-based training program in Australia. The
training should provide additional skills in their
occupation or field of expertise.

Student Guardian Visa
International students studying in Australia on a
student visa may require a guardian if they are under
18 years of age. There may also be exceptional
circumstances where a student over 18 years of age may
need a guardian for religious or cultural reasons.

Student visas general information
The Student (Temporary) (Class TU)
The subclasses and the prescribed courses for each
subclass are:
Independent ELICOS (English Language Intensive
Courses for Overseas Students) (Subclass 570)
ELICOS (non-award and Certificate IIV) as a stand-
alone course.
- Students undertaking ELICOS as a pre-requisite to
another course must apply for a visa under the
subclass appropriate to the main course.
Schools (Subclass 571)
- Primary school; secondary school including junior and
senior secondary; approved secondary exchange programs.
Vocational education and training (VET)(Subclass 572)
Certificate I, II, III, and IV; VET diploma; VET advanced
diploma.
Higher education (HE) (Subclass 573) nBachelor degree;
associate degree; graduate certificate; graduate diploma;
HE diploma; HE advanced diploma; masters by
coursework.
Postgraduate research (Subclass 574) Masters by research
degree; Doctoral degree.
Non-award (Subclass 575)
Enabling course; non-award foundation studies; other full-
time courses or components of courses not leading to an
Australian award.
Family Members

Partners and fiancs of Australian citizens, Australian permanent
residents or eligible New Zealand citizens may apply to enter
and/or remain permanently in Australia. Partners and fiancs
include:
people intending to get married (fiancs)
married (de jure) partners
de facto partners (including those in a same sex relationship).
Partner Visa: Offshore Temporary and Permanent
(Subclasses 309 and 100)
For people from overseas to enter and stay in Australia with their
partner, who must be an Australian citizen, Australian
permanent resident. If two years after you apply the relationship
is ongoing, a permanent visa may be granted.
Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300)
For people from overseas to enter Australia, marry their fianc,
who must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent
resident. Once married, holders of this visa can then apply to
remain permanently in Australia.
Parent Visa Options
Parent (Permanent) Visa (Subclass 103)
A permanent visa for parents who have children living in
Australia.
Contributory Parent (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 143)
A permanent visa for parents with children living in
Australia. This visa costs more than the Parent visa but is
generally processed faster.
Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 173)
This is a temporary visa valid for two years. If you hold this
visa you can then apply for the permanent Contributory
Parent visa (subclass 143).
Contributory Parent (Migrant) Visa (from Subclass 173
to Subclass 143)
This visa is for holders of a temporary Contributory Parent
visa (subclass 173), who want to apply for a permanent
Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143).

Child Visa
Child (Permanent) (Subclass 101)
For children from overseas who are the child or stepchild of an
Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New
Zealand citizen.
Orphan Relative (Permanent) (Subclass 117)
For children from overseas whose parents are deceased, permanently
incapacitated, or whose whereabouts are unknown and who have an
eligible sponsor.
Adoption (Permanent) (Subclass 102)
For children from overseas who have been or about to be adopted by an
Australian citizen, the holder of an Australian permanent visa, or an
eligible New Zealand citizen.
Important: If the child was adopted before the parent became an
Australian citizen, the holder of an Australian permanent visa, or an
eligible New Zealand citizen they cannot apply for this visa. They must
apply for a Child visa (subclass 101)
Dependent Child Visa (Subclass 445)
For children whose parent holds a temporary partner visa and is in the
process of obtaining a permanent partner visa.

Applying for a Visa

The Visa and Immigration Office of the Australian
Embassy Manila generally process applications in the
order that they are received by the Embassy and every
effort is made to decide applications well within our
processing standards.
Visa applications should be lodged at the department's
Service Delivery Partner (SDP) in the Philipines,
Philippines Interactive Audiotext Service Incnearest
(PIASI).
A fee will be charged for this service in addition to the
scheduled fee charged by the Australian Government
for all visa applications.

Visa Application Charge
Visa application charge might be broken into instalments,
with one part payable at the time of application, and
another before grant.
First instalment
the base application charge
a subsequent temporary application charge.
The first instalment of the visa application charge is the
total of all of the components that must be paid to lodge
your visa application.
Second instalment
In addition, for some visas you might also have to pay a
further visa application charge. This is paid after you have
made your application but before the visa can be granted.
This second instalment will not be required if your
application is refused.
