UNIFIED POWER QUALITY

CONDITIONER
INTRODUCTION
Unified power quality conditioners (UPQCs) allow the mitigation
of voltage and current disturbances that could affect sensitive
electrical loads while compensating the load reactive power.

It aims at the integration of series-active and shunt-active power
filters.

The main purpose of a UPQC is to compensate for voltage
imbalance, reactive power, negative-sequence current and
harmonics.

This theory, also known as instantaneous reactive power theory.

The p-q theory consists of an algebraic transformation (Clarke
transformation) of the three-phase voltages and currents in the a-b-
c coordinates to the --0 coordinates, followed by the calculation
of the p-q theory instantaneous power components:

Cont.
p0 = v0 i0 instantaneous zero-sequence power.
p = v i + v i instantaneous real
power
q = v i v i instantaneous imaginary power

The power components p and q are related to the same -
voltages and currents, and can be written together.

These quantities are illustrated in Fig. 4 for an electrical system
represented in a-b-c coordinates and have the
