The protagonist, a Chinese girl is having her 25

th
birthday on that day.
Unfortunately, no one remember her birthday and keep treating her like
usual. On the same day, Uncle Teng is inside her house as a guest and
talking to her grandmother about arranged marriage. After that, she was
ordered to cook for them while they talking more about the issue.
Unfortunately, she accidentally dropped the curry she is holding
towards Mr. Tengs trouser while trying to send it to the table for their
dinner. Her grandmother then become so mad because of the ruined
plan and and does not allow her to eat that night. She then runs towards
her room and cry. Her grandmother then followed her to her room, just
to call her clumsy bitch, adding salt to the wound.

In the story, the protagonist was asked to do household chores all
the time.
Her grandmother is getting really mad with her as she is prepared
for an arranged married and yet she dropped the curry
accidentally on Uncle Tengs trousers. She was not allowed to
have dinner after the incident and also called as "clumsy bitch by
her grandmother.
Child, as a punishment, youll have no food tonight. No, its all
right, Uncle Teng. Shell have no food tonight. (Pg 137)
Everything was going on as I planned till that thing happened.
I am so tired of it all. Youll be a spinster the rest of your life.

In Chinese family, the girls must do all house works. Chinese culture
mostly put stress on respecting elder and guest. Besides, most
Chinese also take things seriously when it comes to give hospitality
to their guest. They always want to give their best so that people will
not look down upon them.
Child, you are so clumsy. Uncle Teng, shes born with blind eye,
and has fingers made of sticks, Are you scalded, Uncle Teng?

The arranged marriage is no longer suitable to be applied
in Chinese society nowadays since it is the act of
restricting someones freedom. Modern people now does
not practice most cultures anymore. For example, women
now can does not necessarily to do all the house works.
The protagonist is physically abused. She was asked to
do household chores all the time.

She also mentally abused by her Grandmother by the
phrase "clumsy bitch" and she dreaded when her
Grandmother called her breasts "chicken's bottom".

The treatment given towards the protagonist is different from the
treatment towards C.B.
C.B, was in his room. And when he heard that Grandmother
wanted him, he yawned, stretched out his legs and made faces
at her. After a while, he got up and said he would come. (Pg
134)
Uncle Teng laughed and C.B. laughed, Grandmother nodded.

Women now are no longer restricted to being at home
and become full time housewives. Many of them have
their own profession now and have a maid at home to do
the house works.
