Look for a Pattern

This involves identifying a pattern and

predicting what will come next.
students will construct a table,
then use it to look for a pattern.

Example:

Carol has written a number pattern that
begins with 1, 3, 6, 10, 15. If she
continues this pattern, what are the next
four numbers in her pattern?

Understand

What do you need to find?

You need to find 4 numbers after 15

Plan
How can you solve the problem?

You can find a pattern. Look at the
numbers. The new number depends upon
the number before it.
Solve
Look at the numbers in the pattern.
3 = 1 + 2 (starting number is 1, add 2 to
make 3)
6 = 3 + 3 (starting number is 3, add 3 to
make 6)
10 = 6 + 4 (starting number is 6, add 4 to
make 10)
15 = 10 + 5 (starting number is 10, add 5
to make 15)
New numbers will be
15 + 6 = 21
21 + 7 = 28
28 + 8 = 36
36 + 9 = 45

Construct a table or Organized List

This is an efficient way to classify
or order large amount of data
An organized list provides a
systematic way to record
computations
Example:
Mr. Singhs class voted on the type of fish they
would to buy to go into the new aquarium. They
will buy the fish chosen by the greatest number
of student. Which type of fish is most popular?

Your task is to find the
solution
Hint : Follow the steps

Understand
What do you need to find?

You need find which type of fish received
the most votes.
Plan
How can you solve the problem?

Organize the votes in a table
Solve
Identify All the Possibilities
This is often used with look for a pattern
and construct a table.
Example
A linen shop sells sheets, duvet covers, and pillow
cases. Linens from the Easirest company offer a
choice in each color: a plain sheet or a sheet with
a pattern, a plain duvet cover or a duvet cover
with a pattern, plain pillow cases or pillow cases
with a pattern. Customers may mix and match the
plain or patterned sheets, duvet covers, and pillow
cases in any combination they wish. To help the
shop make its next order from the Easirest
company, you have been asked to make a record
of the different combinations that customers have
chosen. How many different combinations are
possible?
Understand
What do you need to find?

You need to find How many different
combinations are possible
Plan
How can you solve the problem?
You can list out each type of choice and
make combination between them
