What is Operational
Electronic Warfare (EW)?

Why is Understanding Operational
EW so Important in Mission
Planning?
Why Should the Warfighter and the
Engineer Have a Common Understanding
of Electronic Warfare Environment?

According to the DoDpedia
The Engineering Team here:
Develops, validates and provides optimal radar and
communications jamming techniques, tactics, procedures
and strategies.

The engineering team evaluates, tests and publishes
the optimal jamming techniques for use against hostile
RF emitters.

Provide EA expertise to the warfighter for existing and
emerging weapons systems to ensure electromagnetic
spectrum dominance.

Electronic warfare is a commodity that all want but really don't know what to do with
it when they receive it - Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) Commander

EW is anything that Radiates

Electronic Warfare
EW is defined (Joint Pub. 3-13.1):
EW is the ability to deny the threat the use of the EM Spectrum while ensuring friendly
forces have unimpeded access to the EM spectrum . EW includes three major
subdivisions: Electronic Attack (EA), Electronic Protection (EP), and Electronic Support
(ES).
8 Feb 2012 Update:
All Services operate in the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) and, therefore, rely on
electronic warfare (EW) for freedom of action. EW is essential for protecting
friendly operations and denying adversary operations within the EMS
throughout the operational environment.
The term EW refers to military action involving the use of EM energy and directed
energy (DE) to control the EMS or to attack the enemy. EW consists of three
divisions: electronic attack (EA), EP, and electronic warfare support (ES).
USMC:
EW is the 9/16 socket in the tool box that may prevent having to use a
hammer, and in so doing, save lives.

Radar Range Measurement

Target range =
ct

where c = speed of light
t = round trip time
8
Basic Radar Operation
-Radar transmits a wave of Electromagnetic energy (pulse) -Energy scatters in all
directions
-A portion is reflected back to the radar from the target

Why do You Need to Understand
the Operational Aspects of
Electronic Warfare
10
The Final Product Could Kill You
11
Why?

The information provided to the aircrew by the Aircrafts
Electronic Warfare (EW) System is only be as good and
accurate as the skill and knowledge of the engineer that
developed and integrated it.

To do this you have to:

Understand the operational environment in which your
products are used.
Understand why your efforts are so important and critical
to the aircrew in that aircraft.

The volume and diversity of reporting produced by the US Intelligence Community has expanded to the
point where even most experienced analysts are no longer able to easily discriminate actionable
intelligence from an enormous volume of background information.

Knowing the Requirements is
Very Important
14
But Understanding Why is Just as Important
Know why you should follow a particular course of action

Breakdown in Communication
Misunderstanding of Requirements
Not Knowing How the System is Used
Not knowing the Environment the System is Used
Not Knowing the Needs of the User

Constantly Changing Environment
Mission Analysis is Paramount
Deeper understanding of Warfighter needs
Results in better solutions.
The Warfighter understand the threat and how to incorporate his platform and
capabilities against that threat.
Warfighter does not know of understand the available technology
Warfighter depends on you to give you to integrate the technology.
The Engineer knows what technology is available and what it can provide
Innovation can only come from the engineer.

The Engineer is the Innovator

QUESTIONS

Theres a war out there, old friend, a world war, and
its not about whos got the most bullets. Its about who
controls the information - about how we see and hear,
how we work, what we think. Its all about the
information
