INTRODUCTION
o ZigBee is a wireless technology designed for control and
sensor networks.
o It defines a set of communication protocols for low-data-
rate Short-range wireless networking.
o Named after erratic, zig - zagging patterns of bees between
the flowers.
o Operates in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and device-
to-device networks.

o Based on the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard(LR-WPAN).
o Products created by the ZigBee Alliance.
o Operating frequency band
868 MHz in Europe,
915 MHz in the USA and Australia, and
2.4 GHz in worldwide.

Zigbee Device Types

ZigBee Coordinator (ZC)
o Root of the network tree and might bridge to other networks.
o Exactly one ZigBee coordinator in each network.

ZigBee Router (ZR)
o A ZR can act as an intermediate router, passing on data from
other devices.

ZigBee End Device (ZED)
o A ZED cannot relay data from other devices and having long
battery life.
o A ZED requires the least amount of memory.

o Each network node consists of a radio transceiver.
o Follows a request-confirm/indication-response structure.
o Device having up to 256 application objects.
o 0 is reserved for data interface and 255 for broadcast; the
241-254 range is not currently in use.
o Device discovery follow different communication methods
(unicast and broadcast)and using Distance Vector Routing
Algorithm(on demand).

ADVANTAGES
o FREQUENCY BAND :- Zigbee operate in 2.4 GHz spectrum
(unlicensed), 915 MHz and 868 MHz.
o POWER :- Zigbee is upto 10 times more energy efficient than Bluetooth.
o BATTERY LIFE :- Zigbee is designed to run for 6 months to 2 years.
o RANGE :- Zigbee allows a maximum range of 75m.
o DATA RATE :- Low data rates about 20 -250 kbps.
o COMPONENT COST :- The cost of zigbee`s components is lesser than
other technologies.
o TIME TO WAKE UP :- Zigbee device can wake up and get a packet
across a network connection in around 15 milliseconds.

DISADVANTAGES
o Replacement with zigbee compliant appliances can be costly.
o No more secure than a typical 802.11 wireless network.
o Zigbee compliance certification for appliance manufacturers
mandates lithium battery use.
o Can be confusing at first for the home owner.
o Zigbee compliant manufacturers slow to make an appearance on
the market.

CONCLUSIONS:
ZigBee has been developed to meet the growing demand for capable wireless
networking between numerous low-power devices. It offers long life battery
extension and proved to be better wireless technology device. ZigBee demands
low data rate applications, and long battery life capability .
FUTURE SCOPE:
The zigbee technology can be wide used for home and industrial automation.
It lead to the cheap wireless technology, so that it can be widely used for low
rate data transfer. It can also be used for the remote control unit like toys , etc.
