OBJECTIVES
Participants are expected to :
1. Gain better understanding on what action research
really is ;
2. Identify probable problems / topics for action
research ; and
3. Prepare an action research proposal.
ACTIVITY 1

1) Identify three problems you have encountered in your school
( as a school Head ).

2) Discuss these problems with your group mates and identify one
problem common to all / almost all of the members of the
group.

3) How did you address the problem ? Identify the solutions
made.

4) Did the solutions work? What facilitated / hindered the
resolution of the problem ?

ANALYSIS
1. How did you find the activity ?
2. How did it ( addressing a problem or not
addressing a problem ) affect your function as a
school head ?
3. Did it improve your managerial/leaderships skills?
How ?
ACTION RESEARCH
A method of inquiry by which individuals can evaluate
the effectiveness of their own habits and actions
This method of self evaluation can be used by
teachers to assess the effectiveness of their teaching
methods, and the effect of those methods on the
performance of their students.
A reflective process that allows teachers to improve
the effectiveness of their teaching methods
PURPOSE
Improve a practitioners direct practice
of his craft
Solves some practical problems
Investigate educational practices

ACTION RESEARCH IS NOT
about searching for information or digging into
library research books
to contribute new discoveries
a discrete process
an additional task
about complicated statistical treatment
PROBABLE TOPICS
Education and parental involvement
Teaching reading skills
Educating problematic children
Personalizing instruction
Homeschooling transition
Homework
Electronic devices in the classroom
WHO CAN CONDUCT?

Individual Teachers
Group of Teachers
Schools
Districts
CYCLE

PARTS OF AN
ACTION RESEARCH PROPOSAL
Title
Proponent
Type of Research
Problem
describes what to investigate and why
explains the choice of a certain problem
States the statement of the problem ( 1-3 statements)

Plan of Action and Time Frame
list of activities that the researcher/s will undergo in
the conduct of the action research and the
corresponding target time frame for each activity
RUBRIC FOR EVALUATING ACTION
RESEARCH PROPOSAL
APPLICATION
Prepare an action research
proposal on one of the problems
you have encountered
THE THREE MAIN PHASES OF ACTION
RESEARCH
1. Phase 1
Preparation of Action Research proposal
Submission and approval of the division office
2. Phase 2
Implementation of the action research proposal
3. Phase 3
Preparation of the write-up and submission to
the division office
PREPARATION OF ACTION RESEARCH
WRITE UP
GROUP ACTIVITY
1. In your group please answer in 10 minutes:
How to present the write up of the action
research?

2. Group reporting

PARTS OF THE ACTION RESEARCH WRITE UP
Background and rationale
State the problem stated in the proposal
Contains the description of the situation that is
not ideal and why
Objectives of the study
This is the statement of the problem in the
proposal
Related literature
Simple review of related literature
Methodology
The steps that the researcher have undergone
Discussion of results
Discussion is based on the objectives
Presented in tables and graphs (quantitative)
Descriptions ( qualitative)
Use of simple statistics

Conclusions
statement whether the intervention was effective
or not
Other factors discovered by the researcher that
may have contributed to the success or
weaknesses of the interventions
Other problems that may have been discovered
by the researcher

Recommendations
Contain subjects that may be opportunities for
another cycle of the action research
as much as possible , they are not for others
but maybe for the consumption of the researcher

1. What was the problem?
2. What were the statements of the problem?
3. What were the different steps undertaken by
the researcher?
4. What were the results?
5. What were the recommendations? Did they
reflect opportunities for the second cycle of the
action research?
