Performance Improvement by

Changing Modulation Methods

for Software Defined Radios
Guided By
Dr.R.D.Joshi

Introduction

Software Defined Radio (SDR) is a hot topic of wireless

communication research in recent years.
The idea of SDR is to use ultra-high speed sampling and ADC/DAC
modules directly measure the received radio signal and decode
whatever it contains.
A software defined radio is a transmitter and receiver system that
uses digital signal processing (DSP) for coding, decoding,
modulating, and demodulating data.

Abstract

This project focused on an automatic switching of modulation

method to reconfigure transceivers of Software Defined Radio
(SDR) based wireless communication system ( i.e. Dynamic
Reconfiguration of Modulation Techniques) to improve
performance of communication system and implementation of
algorithm on FPGA using Xilinx Spartan ISE 14.2E Developer kit.

Development Task Schedule

Project Stage-1

August- Finalization of project topic.

September- Literature survey and selection of hardware platform

for implementation of project.

October-Research and study.

November-Simulation Result.

Need for SDR

To enable digital signal processing rather than analog signal

processing in radio systems.
To realize a radio communication system where some or all of the
physical layer functions are realized by software.

Case Study

In order to achieve high data rate transmission under a target BER,

to attain so-called Quality of Service (QoS), we propose
modulation-switching algorithm to change the number of bits for
each symbol.
Most of the technological efforts in the wireless communication
area are devoted to increase the rational us of resources and devices
with two main objectives:

To increase of efficiency, measured in terms o radio coverage, number of

served users, power consumption, spectrum usage, biological impact , short
time-to-market and fast network (re)-planning,
To provide a good degree of services for next generation systems, possibly
with a contained investment.
