Manufacturing:
Manufacturing can be defined as the transformation

of materials and information into goods for the

satisfaction of human needs.
It can be considered as a system in which product
design is the initial stage, and the delivery of finished
products to the market is the final output.

Manufacturing process:
Manufacturing process alter the form, shape and/or

physical properties of a given material.

Manufacturing system are the combination of
manufacturing equipment and human bounds by a
common material and information flow.
Manufacturing equipment is used to perform
manufatuing processes.

Classification of manufacturing
processes:
Forming process
Material removing process
Joining process

Forming process:
Metal forming can be defined as a process in which the

desired size and shape are obtained through the

deformation of metals plastically under the action of
externally forces.
o Forging
o Rolling
o Extrusion
o drawing

Machining process:
Its metal removing processes. Shape is found by

removing metal.

Joining process:
Unite individual work pieces to make subassemblies or

final products.

Manufacturing attributes:
There are four attributes for decision making for
manufacturing system.
Cost
Time
Quality
flexibility

Importance of manufacturing:
A manufactured item has undergone a number of

changes during which a raw material become a useful

product, it has added value, defined as monetary
worth in terms of price.
A manufacturing industry is the backbone for its
nations economy.
Provide employment.
Fulfillment of need of human being

Applications of manufacturing:
Transportation
a) Automobile industry
b) Aeronautical industry
c) Locomotives
d) Roads

Construction
Agriculture
Food and beverage
Electronics industry

Medical industry
Steel industry
Textile industry
Heavy electrical industry

Role of manufacturing Engineer

To bring the ideas and design into reality by proper

selection of material, machine and manufacturing

process.
It is desirable for him to have thorough knowledge of
material sciences, design, and manufacturing
processes.
To keep the production competitive he must select
optimum tools and machines.
To visualize the production likely to be encountered in
production.
