JvitindriyaThere is vitality both in

mind and in matter.
Jvitarpa maintain all forms and
prevents them from rotting and
breaking up. This causes human
beings to continue to live. It is caused
by a type of kamma which allows
beings to live and create further
kamma (merit or demerit).

The word jvita can be divided into

two: physical (rpajvita) and
mental (nmajvita). Rpajvita is
the material quality of life and
nmajvita is the life faculty with
mental
concomitant
(jvitindriyacetasika)

The common expressions of ordinary

speech, "a being lives" or "a being dies"
are descriptive merely of the presence or
absence of this material quality of life.

When it ceases forever with reference

to a particular form, we say "a being
dies" and we say "a being is living" so
long as it continues to act in any
particular form. This also locates itself
by permeating the whole body.

Kabalkro hro - So called because gross food

is taken in by making into morsels. Here hra
means nutritive essence (oja) which sustains the
physical body.

hrarpa or
Kabakrhra is
the food eaten,
but not yet
digested.
When it is
digested
and
nourishes,

the parts of our

bodies,becoming
our flesh and
blood, it is
called the
vitality form
(ojarpa).

In
the
statementsabbe
satt
hrahitik, all beings live on food
hra means a condition (paccaya).

ksadhtu paricchedarpa nma

- Limiting material quality the
element of space.
ksa is space, which in itself is
nothingness. As such it is eternal.
ksa is a dhtu in the sense of a
non-entity (nijjva), not as an existing
element like the four Essentials.

ksa

Paricchedarpa or ksadhtu exists

between all forms preventing them
from getting stuck together. No matter
how big or small they are and
whatever shape they take, all forms
must be separated by ksadhtu. If
there were no ksarpa, all forms
would be stuck together without any
shape, but with ksadhtu or
paricchedarpa separating them,
they appear to have different shapes.

ksadhtu means the element of

space. In a heap of sand there is a
space between each particle of sand.
Hence we may say that there are as
many spaces as there are particles of
sand in the heap; and we can also
distinguish the particles of sand from
one another. When the heap is
destroyed the particles of sand are
scattered about, and the space
enclosed between them disappears
also.

This is the material counterpart of

mental
life
faculty.
It
is
characterized as life or vitality, and
maintains the co-existence kinds
of matter at the moment of their
presence.

This is the edible material in

food which sustains the
physical body and allows it to
grow and survive.

This element enables material

phenomena and groups of
material phenomena to be
separate and distinct. It delimits
matter and can be understood to
be the gaps between different
types and groups of matter.
