CODES AND CONVENTIONS

The representation of a romantic drama mainly tends to be a solemn and
clear-cut character study of a couple struggling to unite or stay together,
often ending with tragic or downbeat circumstances.
Romantic Drama film explores the complex side of love. The plot usually
centres around an obstacle that is preventing two people from being
together. The obstacles in Romantic Drama film can range from a family's
disapproval, forbidden love, one's own psychological problems. Many end
with the lovers separating because of the stress of the obstacle, the
realization of incompatibility, or simply because of fate.

In Romanic dramas the costumes dont clearly distinguish the characters.
However in titanic the costumes do distinguish the class and status between
the characters as the film is set in 1912 when the titanic sunk. It is clear for
us to notice the difference in the characters class as the characters of a high
class on the ship wear typical clothes such as corsets, heels, large hats and
bow ties etc. However the lower class characters wear more ragged clothes.
This automatically lets the audience know the difference between characters.
The opening scene of the movie is showing the setting of the film. Showing
the titanic on the sea. This gives an insight into where most of the film will be
set. In romantic dramas the setting at the beginning of the film is of the place
that will be most shown In the film, whether that be the main characters
house etc. Also the opening scene will be of an equilibrium setting of a
normal day. The lighting In the beginning of the opening scene is sepia effect
which during an opening scene of a film allows the audience to feel like they
are back in time. It gives a warm and antique feeling. The characters in the
opening scene are of all ages, all dressed in different clothes distinguishing
their class and status as we know that in this time period characters class
were clear because of what they wore.
