1. What is Grammar Translation Method?

Grammar translation (hereafter GT) was
originally associated with the teaching of Latin
and to a much lesser extent - ancient Greek.
Interestingly, as Howatt (1984:131) points out,
'grammar' and 'translation' are actually not the
distinctive features of GT, since they were
already well-accepted as basic principles of
language teaching.
What was new was the use of invented, graded
sentences rather than authentic(!) literary texts
in order to make language learning easier.

2. Was it conducted correctly?

YE
S!

Teacher reads aloud the literary passage and

the pupils repeat after the teacher.
Teacher pauses at certain words and translates
the meaning of the words directly using their
mother tongue.
Pupils ask questions in their native language
and also answered by the teacher using native
language.

After finished reading, teacher asks the

pupils the meaning of certain words to
show their understanding of the text.
Teacher gives them exercise give the
name of the pictures given based on
the reading text they read before.
Teacher discusses the answers with the
pupils and corrects the wrong answers
immediately using native language.

Was it effective?

The answer is Yes

This is because the aim of GTM is make

able the students to speak and write the
language better
Low-proficiency class- probably will not
use the language in conversing
This technique allow them to memorize
the vocabulary and meaning
Understand and comprehend English texts

The student of 4 Zamrud were able

to follow the lesson since the teacher
have used mother tongue through
out the class
The exercise given by teacher is also
helping translating the targeted
words.

How to Make it
Better??

1. Bring Dictionary to Class

Teacher can ask students to bring
dictionary to class for them to have a
check on the words that they do not know.
With the use of dictionary skill, it will allow
students to understand and memorize the
words taught.
The use of dictionary too will benefit the
students as they will be able to
understand easier.

2. Drilling Activities
Teacher provides pictures and word
cards for students and they have to
mix and match them with the correct
answers.
Students find out the meaning of the
words from dictionary and copy them
into a book.
Teacher can then held a spelling
session for the students.

3. Flashcards
Teacher apply the use of flashcards
to make this method better.
Students are easily attracted to
affective stuffs. e.g. picture cards,
flashcards
With this, they will have a better
memory on the words taught by the
teacher as they are attracted to the
teaching materials used.
