Definition
“Artificial intelligence (A.I.) is a branch of
computer science that deals with intelligent
behavior, learning, & adaptation in
machines”
History of A . I .
• In 1950,Alan Turning introduced the
“Turning system”
• The first working A.I. programs were
written in 1951 to run on the Ferranti
Mark I machine of the University of
Manchester
• John McCarthy coined the term “artificial
intelligence’” at the first conference
devoted to the subject, in 1956
History of A . I .
( contd )
• At the same time, Jon Von Neumann ,
developed the game theory
• During 1960s & 1970s Joel Moses
demonstrated the power of symbolic
reasoning for integration problems in
Macsyma program
History of A . I .
( contd )
• The team of Ernst Dickmanns built the
first robot cars (Robots used by
common people)
• After the September 11,2001 attacks
there has been much renewed interest
& funding for the threat – deduction A.I.
systems, including machine vision
research & data - mining
Definition of
Robotics
• According to the Robot institute of
America (1979):
“A reprogrammable , multifunctional
manipulator designed to move materials,
parts, tools or specialized devices
through various programmed motions for
the performance of a variety of tasks.”
History &
development of
Robots
• One of the first recorded designs of
a
humanoid robot was made by Leonardo
da Vinci in around 1495
• In the 1930s Westinghouse made a
humanoid robot known as Elektro
TYPES OF ROBOTICS
Cartesian robot /Gantry robot: Used for pick and place
work, application of sealant, assembly operations,
handling machine tools and arc welding It's a robot
whose arm has three prismatic joints, whose axes are
coincident with a Cartesian coordinator.

Cylindrical robot: Used for assembly operations, handling

at machine tools, spot welding, and handling at
diecasting machines
It's a robot whose axes form a cylindrical coordinate
system.

Spherical/Polar robot: Used for handling at machine

tools, spot welding, diecasting, fettling machines, gas
welding and arc welding. It's a robot whose axes form a
polar coordinate system.
types
SCARA robot: Used for pick and place work,
application of sealant, assembly operations and
handling machine tools It's a robot which has two
parallel rotary joints to provide compliance in a
plane.

Articulated robot: Used for assembly operations,

diecasting, fettling machines, gas welding, arc
welding and spray painting. It's a robot whose arm
has at least three rotary joints.

Parallel robot: One use is a mobile platform handling

cockpit flight simulators It's a robot whose arms
have concurrent prismatic or rotary joints.

APPLICATIONS OF
ROBOTICS
INDUSTRIAL ROBOTS- Robots today are being utilized in
a wide variety of industrial applications.

MOBILE ROBOTS-Also known as Automated Guided

Vehicles, or AGVs, these are used for transporting
material over large sized places .

TELE ROBOTS- These robots are used in places that are

hazardous to humans, or are inaccessible or far away

SERVICE ROBOTS-  this category comprises of any robot

that is used outside an industrial facility,

SPACE ROBOTS- used for space research

AGRICULTURAL ROBOTS- robots used for agricultural

purpose
i

Advantages
1• ) Going to far away planets
2 ) Spying on people in ways people can't move and from
views humans can't reach
3 ) Going far down into the unknown waters where humans
would be crushed
4 ) Giving us information that humans can't get
5 ) Working at places 24 / 7 without any salary and food .
Plus they don't get bored
6 ) They can perform tasks faster than humans and much
more consistently and accurately
7 ) They can capture moments just too fast for the human
eye to get , for example the Atlas detector in the LHC
project can capture ~ 600000 frames per second while we
can see at about 60
8 ) Most of them are automatic so they can go around by
themselves without any human interference
9 ) They can entertain us and help us in certain tasks
Disadvantages
1) People can lose jobs in factories

2) It needs a supply of power

3) It needs maintenance to keep it running
4) It costs money to make or buy a robot
