ANALYSIS OF PROPER

MANORS
By Michaela McCole

CAMERA
At the start of Proper manors S2, E2 the
shot shown is a close up shot of a mans
hands and the shot is focused on the
hands and a part of his face blurring out
the image in the background. His hand
movements show that he could either be
praying as something unfortunate has
happened or he could be thinking about
an event which has happened.
Carrying on through the opening of the
episode the camera angles focus on the
specific people who are talking, this
shows that they want you to focus on the
person who is in the light at the time.
Also it allows to show power of the
different people who are talking.

CAMERA
The camera angle here shows the man
who is talking in clear shot and the
people who are in the background blurred
out, it shows his importance when he is
speaking as he is giving devastating
news to the people in the waiting room.

The shot here shows that the woman and

the son have received devastating news
about the loss of their son/brother and
the mum is comforting the son. The
camera is still blurred out the people in
the background to show the shot is solely
focused on them two.

SOUND

At the start of the episode, there is sad and depressing music played. This
allows the audience to understand the emotion of this episode and they
know that there is going to be something bad happening/happened or going
to happen.
After this in the episode the music carries on until a man comes in and
states Attention please and the music stops as he says this, everyone
starts to sigh and then is quiet listening to the man and they are listening
to what he is about to say to them.
When it cuts from the previous scene of the man asking them for their
attention, the music then is re played this time it is another sound which is
different from the previous. As the music is being played the scene is that a
woman is being taken into hospital on a hospital bed and they are all
around her taking her to a hospital ward. The music is with a beat and
shows the tension and then shows the mum running down the hall chasing
after her.
The music is then kept playing throughout when the scene cuts to the
people reading from the notice board if their daughter/son is alive or not.

MISE EN SCENE
The first shot shown is the establishing
shot, which shows the hospital. The
establishing shot is good because it will
set the scene and we will know the events
that happen will happen within this
hospital.

This shot shows the emotion on this

womans face, it shows how much distress
she is in waiting for information about her
daughter. This close up shot shows her
with her hand on her forehead just waiting
for the doctor to come and give her news
about what is going to happen next.

MISE EN SCENE
This shot shows the devastation on this
woman's face as they read out that their
son/daughter is not on the alive list, the
woman is comforting her son whilst they
are both crying looking at the list. This
shot is a shot focused on only these two
which shows that this scene is based
around them.

This shot shows the firefighters in their

costume and shows the audience the
sense of realism throughout the show, as
there has been a disaster the firefighters
are still trying to find more bodies within
this fire that has taken place.

EDITING

In the episode there was no major editing which the audience could see,
there was only cut scenes which cut the different scenes to another scene.
The first shot dips from black to the shot which is a good editing technique
as the shot which is shown is quite dark and therefore dark reflects sadness
within the scene.
Within some of the scenes there is blurring of the background image,
focusing on one person which shows the importance of that character.
As the editing is so limited, this could be due to the fact that they have a
small budget which means they cant afford to spend a lot of money on a
good editing software as they may use the money elsewhere.

HOW THE STORY IS BEING

BUILT
The story is being built as from the beginning we dont know anything about what is going on as
the shot we see is an establishing shot and a shot of a mans hands. The story then begins to
unfold when we are told that there has been a dramatic event and the man who walks into the
room demands everyone's attention to listen to his news. He goes on to explain that he has the
list of the survivors who have had minor injuries but have been treated and are of a good
condition. This puts the mood back to a normal level, however then we are told that there are still
more people yet to be found and bodies remained unidentified which leaves the people in the
waiting room stressed. The story then reveals that a woman has been badly injured by this event
and her mum is waiting curiously to find out what has happened. We then realise that she is not
in a good position and isnt stable. The story keeps building up throughout the scenes giving you
some more information about the different scenes. We then get to know that the girls mother is
allowed in to see her in her ward, after being let in they speak for a while and the heart monitor
stops beating which they then announce the time of death and as this is happening the mother is
left distraught crying on the floor. This builds the story up as now we know more about what's
happening. Furthermore after this event happens the man re entered the waiting room to give
more information about the other people who are dead/alive and people wait to find out about
their loved ones. After this has happened the scene ends with a previous character re entering
the scene and a woman states Mum? I thought you were dead which is where the scene ends.
Throughout this episode the story is keeps being built throughout every scene. As from the start
of the episode you are unaware of the different events which are going to take place and the
events get more series throughout especially when the girl dies and then it leaves the scene with
a cliffhanger.
