COMMINUTION EXAMPLE 5302 CRUSHING 2

The following example is designed to demonstrate a simple

crushing/screening plant in which a circulating load is present. It has been
written as though the users have had a small amount of practice with Metsim.
Step 1: In the Model Parameters menu, check the Particle Size Analysis
box and click Yes when asked to change the mesh sieve series. For this
example, we will use the U.S. Standard series. Leaving the defaults in as our
screen sizes, we can then select SSNI Screen Sieve Series for Data Entry
from the Input menu to select which data we have to enter. To simplify, we will
delete all of the screens with the exception of the 48.0 IN, 12.0 IN, 6.00 IN,
3.00 IN, and 1.50 IN. Also in the Model Parameters menu under the Calc
Parameters tab, change the units of mass to short tonne.
Step 2: From the Comp menu, go to the Component Database and select
SiO2 (to simplify this example) as the solid component. It is then good
practice to sort the component list by phase, which is done by clicking on
Phase at the top of the edit components page.
Step 3: Draw the flowsheet as is shown below (Note Unit operation 9,
CVT, needs to be reversed).

Step 4: In stream 1, input 500 ST/HR of solids (SiO2). Click on

the SSA button in stream 1 and enter in the following data:

The screen size analysis may be graphed by clicking on the Graphic Menu Option
GSSA Screen Size Analysis Graph and selecting the type of Graph to be used and
then stream 1.
Step 5: Edit the Static Grizzly. Change the Engineering Units (ME) to English and
set the Opening Size (SZ) at 36 in. Calculate the Static Grizzly.
Step 6: Edit the Apron Feeder. Change the units to English and set the parameters
as follows: DF = 1.25; DC = 2000; BS = 0.25; SP = 0.01. Calculate the Apron Feeder.
Step 7: Edit the Jaw Crusher. Change the units to English, and set the following
parameters as such: CS = 8; TH = 5; OS = 13; WI = 12; CO = 2-Empirical.
Calculate the Jaw Crusher.
Step 8: Open and close the Belt Conveyor below the Jaw Crusher (we are not
designing the belt conveyor in this example, but it needs to be opened at least once to
set the default parameters for mass balancing). Calculate the Belt Conveyor.
Step 9: Edit the Screen. Change the units to English and set the Lower screen size
to 0.5 inches and the Middle screen size to 1.75 inches. Ensure that the output
streams are set up so that stream 10 is the Undersize, stream 9 is the Lower, and
stream 8 is the Middle.

Step 10: Same as Step 8 but for the Belt Conveyor that feeds the Cone Crusher.
Step 11: Edit the Cone Crusher. Change the units to English and set the parameters
as follows: CS = 2; TH = 0.5; OS = 2.5; WI = 12; CO = 2-Empirical. Run the Cone
Crusher.
Step 12: Same as Step 8 for the Cone Crusher Discharge Conveyor.
Step 13: Calculate the Section. Displaying the total mass flows, the spreadsheet is as
shown:

NOTE:
(VP80 S) 25400
(VP80 calculates in microns, and this expression will convert it to inches.)
