INTRODUCTION
POLARIZATION
Two-dimensional transverse waves exhibit a phenomenon
called polarization .
Wave polarization is the E fields orientation, direction and the
possible planar component of EM wave satisfying the basic
transverse nature.

Advantages of CP over LP
CP is preferred since LP signal undergoes change in
polarization while travelling through the ionosphere due to
earths magnetic field while CP signal has self
compensating facility.
CP signal allow the receiving antenna to discriminate
between direct signal from the satellite and strong
multipath signal arriving at antenna after reflection.
The polarization of reflected multipath signal is changed
to LHCP and thus allowing the antenna to discriminate
against it specially when it has good axial ratio.
DIPOLE ANTENNA
It consists of two identical conductive elements such as metal
MOTIVATION
The combination of Circular polarization and axial mode crossed
dipole antenna best suits for satellite combination, missiles and for GPS
application.
GPS receiver requirements are:
i. RHCP/LHCP
ii. Wide 3dB axial ratio beamwidth that faces the sky
iii. A high front to back ratio to avoid interference from the
ground.
With the use of CPCD antenna we can fulfill all the above
requirements with best VSWR along with
easiness in frequency
variation.

OBJECTIVE
To design and develop a compact circularly
polarized cavity backed crossed dipole antenna for
GPS bands.
The reason of choosing CPCD is that it provides
improved CP radiation in terms of 3dB axial ratio
bandwidth and beamwidth than that of other CP
antennas like pinwheel planar monopole antenna
and microstrip antenna.
10
METHODOLOGY
The designing methods of CPCD antenna is as follows :
Software- HFSS(High Frequency Structure Simulator)
Substrate- Rogers RO4003 of permittivity 3.38, loss tangent .0027 and
thickness .2032 mm
Feeding -coaxial feeding
Additional Requirements Cavity reflector is also chosen so that it will increase front to back ratio by
suppressing the 8 shaped pattern.
Mender line and arrow head shaped end is attached in each dipole arm to
reduce the dipole length and achieve compact size of primary radiation
element.
The quarter printed ring is employed to produce CP radiation along with for
broadband characteristic.

EXPECTED OUTCOME
This thesis output is aimed to give a circularly polarized crossed
dipole antenna that will work for GPS bands (LI band 1.575GHz ) .
FUTURE WORK
Till date my study part is going on and I will try my best to
wrap up the study part as soon as possible.
After that I will go for understanding and application study of
HFSS(High Frequency Structure Simulator) Software.
Further I will move for designing part and later on I will try to
fabricate my designed antenna .
