Introduction
DGFT or Directorate General of Foreign Trade is a

government organization in India responsible for the


formulation of EXIM guideline and principles for Indian
importers and Indian exporters of India .
Before 1991, DGFT was known as the Chief Controller

of Imports &Exports (CCI&E).


Officials of DFGT works in close coordination with other

related economic offices like central excise authorities ,


DRI authorities and Enforcement Directorate .

Digital Signature is also being introduced

by DGFT in 2004.
DGFT had there 35 regional offices and 4
Zonal Offices throughout India.
The functioning of zonal offices is same
as regional offices but along with other
functions these offices have to manage
working of nearby regional offices also.
The Department of DGFT comes under
Ministry of Commerce.

DGFT also acts as a trade facilitator.


It also deals with the quality complaints

of the foreign buyers .

Functions Of DGFT
To Issue Importer Exporter code to

Importers and Exporters of India.


IEC is a 10 digit code required for all
persons for commercial trading with
other countries i:e Imports and Exports.
DGFT Permits or regulates the transit of
goods between India and other
countries with whom there are treaties
by Indian Gov. to facilitate Trade.

To Implement EXIM policy or Foreign trade

policy of India by issuing various schemes


and guidelines.
The basic function of DGFT is to facilitate
trade with other countries.
DGFT also trained exporters by arranging
seminars on regular basis and
communicates the various policies to
exporters in these seminars.
To grant the permission of free export in
Export Policy Schedule 2.

Setting standard input-output norms is

also controlled by the DGFT.


DGFT also provide trade leads to
persons who want to start there
business.
DGFT also issue Certificate of Origin to
importers and exporters.

DGFT also listen to complaints by foreign
buyers or sellers and try to resolve that
complaints at the earliest.

DGFT(Chandigarh)
DGFT is one of the regional office of

DGFT.
Along with Chandigarh they are also
looking for Himachal Pradesh,
Panchkula, Ropar and SAS Nagar.
Most of the exports from Chandigarh
are of Pharmaceutical and auto parts
products.
They are organizing seminars twice a
month in order to trained there

Form for IEC Code is ANF 2A and it is also
available online and one can apply for
IEC code online also.

Type of Incentives
Exemption from custom duty on Importing Machinery

from outside India.(Export Obligation Discharged


Certificate).
Exemption from custom Duty on Importing any input
which act as a raw material for further
manufacturing.
Country specific, Product specific Incentives which
are covered under Focus products and Focus
Markets.(2%,3%,4%) Information is available on
Appendix 37.
All of above incentives can be avail only by fulfilling
basic conditions on them and there must be 15%
value addition.
