Float Transducer

Sensing
Sensor is a device that receives
and responds to a signal or
stimulus; the portion of a
measurement system that
responds directly to the physical
variable being measured.
Transducer converts the physical
variable into alternative form
(commonly electrical voltage)

Classification of
Sensors
1)

Discrete-Event Sensors:
o Mechanical limit switches
o Proximity switches
o Photoelectric sensors

2)

Continuous Sensors:
o Linear position transducers: The
simplest form is a linear
potentiometer, where the position of
the slider is proportional to the
output voltage.

2) Continuous Sensors:
o Rotary (angluar) transducers: Rotary
potentiometers sense angle in a way
analogous to linear potentiometers.
o Float Transducers: A float
transducer uses a rotary
potentiometer to produce a voltage
proportional to the angle of an arm
with a float attached.

Introduction to Float
Transducer
Continuous level indication and
monitoring of all types of liquids
They are particularly reliable
The analogue controllers have an
electrical output signal with
adjustable relay contacts for level
monitoring or integrated indicating
devices for level indication.

Float Transducer
It is not influenced by conductivity,
temperature, pressure and
viscosity
Function Principle:
The transducer comprises a
measuring tube on which a float,
fitted with a magnet, switches the
reed contacts mounted in a tube in
a non-contacting fashion.

Float Transducer

The measuring tube in the level sensors is

equipped with a chain of resisters and reed
contacts. The float activates the sealed
contacts through the wall of the measuring
tube, whereby a measuring circuit voltage
proportional to the level is picked off at the
resistance measuring chain.

This sensing technique is similar to the operation

of a sliding contact on a resistance potentiometer
The voltage sampled from the chain of the resistors is
transferred to a transmitter which outputs a current
proportional to the liquid level

Why we need
modification?

A Modern Design of an
Electronic Float
Transducer

Construction
Cylindrical (or spherical) float
flow sensing tube
two metallic plates
solid rod
metallic ribbon
Tank

Working
Insulating material
electrical contact
contact with the liquid
non corrosive
counter weight
sufficient length
dielectric medium

Thus the level sensor has an

easy automated industrial
application since its principle
of operation and design is very
simple compared to the
conventional float
transmitters.

Applications
Water reservoirs
Waste water and clarification
plants
Feed and batching tanks
Drinking water tanks
Chemical tanks
