How did you use media

technologies in the
construction, research
and planning?

Technology Is extremely important in

development of our society, offering
opportunities for creativity, empowerment,
distribution and democratisation.

Information society
Its a society whereby we are governed by technology. The most
influential theorists of this is Daniel Bell, his work was called The
Coming of Post-Industrial Society which was first published in
1973. He argues that technology has transformed social
relationships and our ways of looking at the world (Bell 1999)
which is increasing the human control over nature and
transforming economic productivity.
There are five positive outcomes of this change in the social
world

 1) That living standards have risen worldwide due

to the wages being increased and therefor social
class inequalities in Western societies have
decreased.

 2) Planning occupations such as

technicians, engineers and many
others have been developed which has
created a new class

 3) Theres a new definition of rationality in

the sense of efficiency and optimisation
which is where we use resources without
much cost and effort. For example the
introduction of quantitative techniques for
engineering and economics which, in Bells
opinion (1999) moves the older modes of
speculation, tradition and reason. This
comes from allowing more precise
predictions of whats going to happen with
social and economic trends.

 4) Social relationships have been formed from new networks which

show a movement of relationship to occupational ties.
This can be linked to Baudrillards theory of hyper reality. The
conversations happen over social networks arent real as they dont
actually happen, theyre not face to face.
This can also be linked to McLuhans theory of medium is the
message as the technology is more important than the content.
Which also can be linked to Debords, style over substance theory,
where there style of how youre conversing is more important that the
content of your converstaion.

 5) How we see time and space has been

changed due to evidence in modern arts
portrayal of new standards of speed and
height in comparison to an earlier time.

So this explains how theory on information society has shaped

out society.

Cross Media Convergence

Cross media convergence offers great opportunities for distribution as it
means that texts are released on many different platforms and so you can
reach the technology in many different opportunities, for example you can
watch a video on youtube on your phone, computer and tablet.
It can also help offer opportunities for empowerment, as therere more
opportunity to reach the information, so everyone is equal to the information,
so it doesnt give one person the power of information as were all able to
reach it if we want to as we can search it on our phone, computer or tablet.
Its the same for democratisation.
It offers opportunity to be creative as you have to create the different ways
that the information can reach the audience and how diverse the technology
could be.

Synergy
This can create opportunities for creativity as you have to
be creative in what media texts you could release at the
same time to promote a certain topic. For example,
designs in merchandise or posters.
This can also produce opportunities for distribution as it
theres certain media texts that will appeal to a certain
audience which may not of been reached by another
form of text and so youre reaching a larger target
audience and therefor promoting the product.
This can be linked to democratisation as we all have
equal access to some sort of form of media text which
would inform us on the product and this is similar for

Advantages and Disadvantages of

the technology used within my
coursework.
With the technology I used within my coursework, there
was advantages in how the technology was useful but
sometimes I was presented with difficulties produced by
the technologies.
This meant I was able to learn ways around the
technology but also be helped by the technology to
improve my coursework.

Photoshop
Advantage- An advantage of photo shop would be that
it helps with the cohesion of my work and it meant I was
able to further my media texts by changing the images
that I used to fit in with my product.

Disadvantage- A difficulty would be that it was really

difficult to use; I was faced with many difficulties of
creating things as theres many things you need to
know about it, but I was helped by classmate and online
tutorials.

Blogger
Advantage- An advantage would be that Im able to
present my work in a certain place and that I can put it
on as I go along and its easy to access.

Disadvantage- A disadvantage would be that youre

relying on the internet and computer system to hold all
of your coursework which is a massive part of your final
grade and that you wouldnt be able to do anything is
the internet crashed.

Premier Pro
Advantage- I found it easy finding out what did what on
the program. It was set out really nicely and so I was
able to explore and find the parts of software which I
needed to use.

Disadvantage- Sometimes the program can be

temperamental as you may need to open the program a
few times before youre able to view your video as it
would be playing but the screen was showing a yellow
box which foreign symbols on it.

YouTube
Advantage- an advantage of YouTube would be that
theres so many helpful tutorials to help you with other
technologies on there (cross media convergence).

Disadvantage- When putting my work on YouTube, I

found it took a long times and a few attempts as it kept
crashing.

InDesign
Advantage- An advantage of InDesign would be that its easy to layout
your page and place your designs onto it making it easier to produce
your text.

Disadvantage- Would be that I found it was quite hard to locate and use
particular tools, and I found the movement of the image or text when
placed together was difficult because it was hard to choose what you
were selecting. Another problem with InDesign was all the lines that are
present on the screen as it means you have to keep pressing shift W to
view the image but it makes progressing your work take a lot longer.

Camera
Advantage- An advantage of using cameras was that
youre able to control the effect of what the image looks
like, for example you can focus on what particular part
in the scene or you can change the focus to perform a
pull focus and many other effects.
Disadvantage- Would be that trying to get the right
conditions for the filming, for example, some lighting is
really unhelpful with filming and some weather will be
even more unhelpful.

Prezi and Emaze presentation

software
Advantage- It easy and nice looking way to present your
work which is really easy to use.

Disadvantage- Sometimes the templates werent

suitable for what I wanted to present.

Issue
Advantage- Being able to present and publish my work
in an astatically pleasing way.

Disadvantage- It took a long time uploading my work.

Scribd
Advantage- A nice and easy way to publish my work.

Disadvantage- its sometimes slow uploading my work.
