Axle

Axle is a mechanical part of a vehicle which is a device like 2 wheel

seperated by a rod or other stabilizing device.
Need of AxleVehicle is incomplete without axle
Axle wear the whole weight of
vehicle
Braking & acceleration is done through
axle

TypeThere are 2 type of axle

1-Dead Axle
2-Drive Axle

Dead Axle
A dead axle is what that is not connected to
engine. It does not turn under its own power or
torque. It move only when vehicle is move due to
drive axle
Application & Function of Dead Axle1. It exist for load bearing purpose
2. It distribute weight of vehicle
3. Heavy transport vehicle contain multiple axle
4. Mostly dead axle contain high load bearing spring.

Drive Axle
A drive axle is what that is connected
to engine. Its working is that it move
or turn the vehicle. Its formation is in
such type that, it is split into 2
halves

Classification of Drive Axle

1. On the no of wheel drive

2 wheel drive one drive axle

4 wheel drive two drive axle

2. On the position of wheel drive

Front wheel drive

Rear wheel drive

FWD ---

RWD---

Construction

The basic part of an drive axle is -

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Hub
CV Joints (Outer)
Drive Shaft
CV Joints (Inner)
Diffrential / Transaxle

1- HUB It is locate at the end of the axle.

It is used for join wheel to axle.

HUB

Construction

2. CV Joints- CV joint is a drive line component whose output speed is

equal to input speed at any angle. Eg- Rzeppa joints.
Inner CV Joint
Allow for suspension changes
while axle is rotating.

Outer CV Joint
Allow wheel to move or revolve
while axle is rotating or
vehicle is turning at an angle.

Construction

3. Drive Shaft/Axle Shaft

It transmit power from inner cv joint to outer cv joint.
4. Differential / Transaxle
DifferentialIt is a device which transfer power from drive shaft to wheel
Function1.
Split amount of torque going to each level.
2.
Allow the wheel to rotate at diff. speed in turns.
TransaxleTransaxle is a component that combines the function of
transmittion,differential,drive axle into one
integratedAssembly.
They are fitted in 2 ways
Front to rear & Transverse
They are of automatic & manual both.

Difference b/w

Front wheel drive & Rear wheel drive

Transaxle is used in FWD.

Difference in length of drive shaft
is more.
FWD vehicle do not turn very
fast.
Torque absorb damper is used
(Torsional damper)

Differential is used in RWD.

Difference in length of drive
shaft is less.
RWD vehicle turn very fast.
Torque absorb damper does not
used.

Torsional damper
It is a device which is used to absorb excess torque in shaft.

Working of Torsional damper

When differential send power to the wheel, the longer shaft will have less resistance
because the CV joint operate at less angle most of power will send to shorter shaft.
Torsional damper absorb the excess torque in shorter shaft .

Working

we can understood the working in the way thatWhen the power is given by power shaft to pinion
gear to ring gear gear of differential then it
transmit the power individually to sun gear of
each halves shaft or drive shaft then this power is
transmitted through CV joint & pass to hub then
wheel.
By the use of this power or torque wheel start
rotating & vehicle is moving.
