WATER MANAGEMENT IN

TURKEY

According to the calculation of Turkeys water capacity, Turkey has an annual

potential of 1650 cubic meter of water per person. It is estimated that in 2030,
Turkeys water potential per person will decrease to 1100 cubic meter.
Therefore; Turkey will be among the countries which will experience water
scarcity.

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE IN WATER

SCARCITY

We should treat all domestic and industrial waste water.

Water should be categorized in terms of its quality. For instance, using high
quality of water in agriculture will be waste of our natural source. Instead,
treated waste water can be used in both agriculture and watering green areas in
big cities.

THE WATER SUPPLY NETWORKS IN

TURKEY

Water loss in the network is a serious problem in Turkey. 40 per cent of water in these
networks has gone to waste.

In order to solve this problem, old water supply systems in the big cities should be
renewed.

WATER RAIN MANAGEMENT

We should collect rain water especially in areas where there is no air pollution. Then, it
can be used in our houses and green areas.

MAKING USE OF MUD

Waste water is treated; but the remaining part which is mud is one of the most
crucial problems of the clean-up systems.

Mud in composts can be used as natural fertilizer in agriculture and even it can
be sold by the municipalities.

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE IN WATER

MANAGEMENT?

75 per cent of water in Turkey is used in agriculture. Flooding method is

generally preferred by the farmers in Turkey. The use of this traditional method
should be reduced and we should make use of drip irrigation.

Factories should treat their waste water and reuse it.

Purifying sea water and using it again have been added to agenda several times
by our government. Some projects for Istanbul were prepared two or three
years ago; but this method is not an urgent solution to water scarcity.

In Turkey, many waste water treatment systems have been constructed recently.
Especially in the cities whose populations are more than one hundred thousand,
these systems should be completed in two or three years.
