High/Low Angle
Shot
Refers to position of camera, not
subject.
Use can suggest power/social status.
Tilt
Vertical movement of camera
(up/down)
Emphasises height or beauty of the
subject.
Pan
Horizontal movement of camera
(left/right).
Emphasises characters and action as
part of the setting/mise-en-scene
Trackin
g
Camera moves at the same pace as
the subject. Often achieved using
steadicam.

Fade

could be indicating an
unreliable narrator
(fantasist).

Black
Final image darkens until the screen is
black.
Suggests endings/ finality/ death of a

Pan
Steady movement of camera in a
horizontal motion.
Emphasises characters and action as

Cross
cutting
Used to show 2 scenes at same time (2
people on the phone).
Suggests a connection
between two situations.
Slow motion
Slowing a the pace of frames.

character has been looking at.
Could indicate a desire or
motivation in a character.
Flashbac
k
A scene or moment in a film in which
the audience is shown an event that
happened earlier in the films
narrative.

shape are juxtaposed from one into

Again suggests a connection between
these objects/characters.
