THE WRITING PROCESS

The writing process is systematic and

stepwise procedure of writing
reports,papers,essays and research
papers .basically there are three major
stages they are as follows :
Writing
process
1.
Invention

2.
Arrangeme
nt

3. Drafting
& Revision

Invention
Invention is also known as prewriting stage.
It is an important part of the writing process.
At this stage we discover what interest us
about our subject and what ideas we will
develop in our essay when we are give any
writing assignments, we may be tempted to
plunge into a first draft immediately. There
are some other parts under the stage as:

1. Understanding the assignment

Almost everything we write in college will begin as

an assignment. Some assignment will not be direct
and easy to understand.
Before beginning to write, we need to understand
what we are being asked to do. If the assignment is a
written question, we have to read it carefully several
times and underline its key idea.
2. Setting limits
Once you understand the assignment, you should
consider its length .purpose ,audience ,and occasion
and your own knowledge.

3. Moving from subject to topic:

Many writing assignments begin as broad area of interest or
concern. These general subject always need to be narrowed to
specific topic that can be reasonably discussed within the limit
of assignment.
E.G.:

Subject

Topic

Business in Nepal
Importance of
women
education

Education

As these example illustrate, a topic does more then narrow a

general subject. a topic also defines the manner in which you will
treat a subject.

a. Questions for probing: It is a process of moving

from subject to topic through useful questions which
reflects ways to operate mind.
b. Free writing:
Free writing is the process of writing where we can write the text
very friendly and freely with out any tension. We can use the free
writing at any stage of writing process. For e.g. to generate
supporting information or to find a thesis. Free writing is also a
particularly useful way to narrow a general subject or
assignment. All whatever we know about something and write
about 10 or 15 minutes is called free writing.

c. Looping: Looping is the practice of doing free writing and revising the
subject matter making it more and more specific. It can produce a great deal
of useful information and help us to decide on a workable topic to write an
essay.
4. Find something to say
Brainstorming and journal writing are useful tools for generating
ideas, and both strategies can be helpful at this stage of the writing
process and whenever we need to find something to say.
a

Brainstorming: We can brainstorm in a group exchanging idea with

several students in our composition class and writing down the useful
idea that come up or we can quickly write down every fact and idea that
relates to our topic.

Journal writing: Journal writing can be useful source of idea of any

stage of writing process. Many writers routinely keep a journal jotting
down experience or exploring idea they may want to use when they
write.

5. Grouping ideas (clustering):

Clustering is a way of visually arranging your ideas that you
can tell at a glance where ideas belong and whether or not
you easier stage of witting process. It is especially useful for
identifying a major point and seeing how idea fits together .
7. Making an informal outline:
As an alternative or fellow up to clustering you can
organize your notes from brainstorming or other invention
technique into an informal outline, quite often an informal
outline is just a list of your major points perhaps presented in
some tentative orders.

8. Understanding Thesis And Support

A thesis is the main idea of our essay. Its the
central point. The concept of thesis and support
stating our thesis and developing ideas that plan
and expand it- is central to the college writing.
Formulating a thesis
a) Defining the thesis statement
b) Deciding on a thesis
c) Stating thesis
d) Implying thesis
