1. INTRODUCTION
In

rural areas for agricultural purposes three phase

induction motors are generally used.

But

in many instances, however, extension of threephase power lines to rural areas is not economical.

A typical

solution to this problem has been the use

of a single- to three-phase static converter, whose
cost is often only a fraction of the cost of providing
full three-phase service.

2. Types of single phase to three phase

converters

a)

Rotary type (ARNO converter)

b)

Auto-transformer with switched capacitors

c)

Static converters

These converters employ bulky magnetic components

of considerable size and weight and produces unbalanced
supply voltages.

3 STATIC CONVERTERS

a) Configurations

with reduced number of

components.
b) Configurations with increased number of
components.
c) AC - AC direct conversion (matrix converter).

3.1 Configuration with reduction of

components

3.2 Principle of operation

When these two voltages, connected in open delta,

are used to energize a three phase star or delta connected
induction motor, the third phase Vca is formed automatically
8
which obeys the balanced three phase law.

When the input voltage Vi is positive, switch T2 is closed and

opened to boost the capacitor voltage and shape the input current to be
sinusoidal at unity power factor.
In the negative cycle of Vi switch Ti performs the same function.

3.3 Full bridge configuration

10

3.4 Advantages
The

converter has to supply only half the power

demanded by the load power, so the less rating
components can be used.

Bi-directional

power flow capability facilitates

regenerative braking of motor.

The

converter employs only a few number of

components.

Provides

input current wave shaping feature.

11

3.5 Disadvantages
The

line to line voltage amplitude of the three phase

load is limited to the amplitude of the single phase

voltage.

12

4. Configurations with increased number

of components
Parallel converters have been used to improve the power
capability, reliability, efficiency, and redundancy.

13

4.1 Advantages
a) reduce the rectifier switch currents

Thus the conduction loss decreases and improves the efficiency.14

b) Improvements on the fault tolerance characteristics

.

Hence it increases the reliability

15

4.2 Advantages of Static Converter Over ARNO

Converter
Absence

of moving parts in the static converter makes

its construction rigid, maintenance free.

Output

of static converters remains balanced and also

voltage variations remain within 5%.

The

total saving per year is Rs. 5.18 lakh and Life cycle
power saving is Rs.74.23 lakh.

Static

converter Efficiency 92% where as Arno

Efficiency 80%.

16

5 APPLICATIONS
Variety

of farming equipment, fans, pumps, air

conditioners, etc.

In

electric traction where auxiliary fans, pumps, etc

need to be operated from the single phase mains.

17

6 CONCLUSION
The

proposed converters provides balanced three-phase output

power and generates a low-distortion input current.

The

configurations with increased number of components are an

interesting option for single-phase to three phase systems due to its
inherent characteristics, such as THD improvements, high
reliability, efficiency and minimizes dc-link voltage fluctuation.

In

terms of future research, the configurations with increased

number of components seem to be a trend due to their specific
advantages.
