The Rejection at Nazareth

He came to his
native place and
taught the people in
their synagogue.

He departed from there

and came to his native
place, accompanied by
his disciples. When the
Sabbath came he
began to teach in the
synagogue

He came to
Nazareth, where he
had grown up, and
went according to
his custom into the
synagogue on the
Sabbath day.

Reflection: First, Jesus preached the about the Kingdom of God

through his parables, and now he is establishing the Church and
his teaching authority to the people.

They were
astonished..

. and many who

heard him were
astonished.

He stood up to read and was

handed a scroll of the prophet
Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and
found the passage where it was
written: "The Spirit of the Lord is
upon me because he has anointed
me to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty
to captives and recovery of sight to
the blind, to let the oppressed go
free, and to proclaim a year
acceptable to the Lord He said to
them, "today this scripture passage
is fulfilled in your hearing"

Reflection: Jesus wants to free the

people not from physical oppression
but from spiritual oppression. He wants
to free the people from their sins, and
to recover their sight from the blind
teachings of the Pharisees and the
Sadducees.

"Where did this man get

such wisdom and mighty
deeds?" Is he not the
carpenter's son? Is not
his mother named Mary
and his brothers James,
Joseph, Simon and
Judas? Are not his
sisters all with us? Where
did this man get all this?
And they took offense at
him.

They said, "Where did

this man get all this?
What kind of wisdom
has been given him?
What mighty deeds are
wrought by his hands!
Is he not the carpenter?
the son of Mary, and the
brother of James, Joses
and Judas and Simon?
And are not his sisters
here with us? And they
took offense at him.

They also asked,

"Isn't this the son
of Joseph?"

Reflection: Instead of understanding Jesus, the people questioned

him, where he came from and who his disciples are.

Reflection: It is hard for the people
to accept Jesus because they
thought they know him all too well.
In Luke, Jesus told them that only
the chosen will be saved.

And he said "Amen, I say to you, no
prophet is accepted in his own native
place. Indeed, I tell you, there were
many widows in Israel in the days of
Elijah when the sky closed for three
and a half years and a severe famine
spread over the entire land. It was
none of these that Elijah was sent, but
only a widow in Zarephath in the land
of Sidon. Again, there were many
lepers in Israel during the time of
Elisha the prophet; yet not one of
them was cleansed, but only Naaman
the Syrian."

And he did not

work many
mighty deeds
there because of
their lack of faith.

So he was not able to

perform any mighty
deed there, apart from
curing a few sick
people by laying his
hands on them. He
was amazed at their
lack of faith.

When the people in the

synagogue heard this, they
were all filled with fury. They
rose up, drove him out of the
town, and led him to the brow
of the hill on which their town
had been built, to hurl him
down headlong. But he
passed through the midst of
the them and went away,
