I. Expand (a+b)n where n is a positive integer,
II. Use the binomial expansion for approximation

Binomial Expansion
A binomial is an expression which has two terms, such as , , , ,

An expansion of the form is called binomial expansion.

Example:

This is the binomial expansion of

(5y3-2)3

Binomial Expansion
n=0, (a+b)0=1
n=1, (a+b)1=a+b
n=2, (a+b)2=a2+2ab+b2
n=3, (a+b)3=a3+3a2b+3ab2+b3
n=4, (a+b)4=a4+4a3b+6a2b2+4ab3+b4
n=5, (a+b)5=a5+5a4b+10a3b2+10a2b3+5ab4+b5
=a5b0+5a4b1+10a3b2+10a2b3+5a1b4+a0b5

Expand (1-2x)4 using Pascals triangle
number.

Solution:

a=1, b=-2x, n=4. The 4th row of Pascal triangle is used:

Expansion of (1+x)n where n is a Rational

Number

Learning Outcome:
Expand (1+x)n where n is a rational number, and
identify the condition |x|<1 for the validity of this expa
nsion.

When n is positive integer, the expansion terminate at the term

e and only valid for -1<x<1 or |x|<1
The expansion is valid for (1+x)n and not for (a+b)n.
To expand (a+b)n , it must first be written as
