Attitudes

Attitude
Is an evaluative statement either favorable or
unfavorable about objects, people, or events. It
reflects how we feel about something. e.g. I like OB
course.

Components of Attitude
Cognition Component
Affective Component
Behavioral Component

Attitudes

Cognition Component
this involves a persons belief / knowledge about an
attitude object. e.g. May pay is low.

Affective Component
this involves a persons feelings / emotions about the
attitude object e.g. I am scared of spiders.

Behavioral Component (conative)


the way the attitude we have influences how we act or
behave. e.g. I am going to look for a job that will pay

me better.

Does Behavior always follow the attitude?


Yes?
The attitude people hold determine what they do. e.g. We watch TV
Programs that we like, we tend to avoid the assignments we find
difficult

No?
People change what they say so it does not contradict with what they do?
e.g. The new Suzuki Swift changes your attitude towards Suzuki cars.

Reason?
Cognitive Dissonance: It refers to any incompatibility between two or
more attitudes or between attitudes and behaviors.

Major Job Attitudes

Job Satisfaction
A positive feeling about ones job resulting from an
evaluation of its characteristics

Job Involvement
The degree to which a person identifies with a job,
actively participates in it, and considers performance
important to self worth.
Another closely related concept is Psychological
Empowerment which refers to employees belief in the
degree to which they affect their work environment, their
competencies, the meaningfulness of their job, and
perceived autonomy in job.

Organizational Commitment
The degree to which an employee identifies with a
particular organization and its goals, and wishes to
maintain membership in the organization.
It has three components:
Affective Commitment (Emotional attachment)
Continuance Commitment (Perceived economic value)
Normative Commitment (Moral or Ethical)
