Practicum 1 Review

By Huy Pham
Exam Structure
• Practicum can have 140-215 questions,
including extra credit
• 99.9% of stations have 5 questions
• 3 C-level, 1 B-level, 1 A-level
• Always a few extra credit stations which
don’t count towards the 50 pts
• 2.5 minutes per station, 30 seconds per
question
• Usually 30 minutes of free roaming time
after everyone completes the exam.
Tips
• Repetition. Anatomy is memorization, not much interpretation.
• Labeling helps. White out pictures and see if you can fill in the
labels on your own.
• Don’t worry about time. You have more than enough time to finish
your exam. You can always go back. The timer is there to get the
faster students out.
• Pay attention the questions. READ THEM CAREFULLY.
• Use your lab manual as a list of what you need to know. Don’t rely
on the pictures. Take your list, find the structures in your textbook
or in other resources.
• Take advantage of the HOAG lab (ADAM and Netter) as well as the
library (a whole shelf of atlases upstairs).
Tips
• Remember to make a key for your abbreviations.
Abbreviations will save you time and space on your
exam. They are a must, but you need to be very neat
and very careful.
• Spelling counts.
• Don’t forget your “of the’s”. It’s better to be
overboard on them. Just make sure you don’t give an
incorrect of the. EG: piston/engine/car when you are
referring to a boat.
• Left and rights for all paired structures.
• Don’t waste lab time. Go to open labs. You paid for it.
ADAM and Netter
• ADAM and Netter Tutorial.
Review
• Do not overlook the first 2 labs
• Know the systems, planes, regional terms.
• Kohler is very important, not just on the exam.
You will need to know how to put a microscope
in Kohler for the rest of the semester.
• The parts of the microscope are important as
well. Again, not just for the exam. TA’s and
instructors expect you to know the parts.
• Cell structure: be ready to label
organelles.

• Mitosis: just study pictures. They

models and slides that we use will be
representative.

• Study these, they are easy points

Histology
• Histology and the ability to use a microscope
are VITAL to your success in anatomy.
• Primary tissues are a way for you to train your
eyes.
• You will encounter histology again in EVERY
unit.
• Don’t rely on google for your images. Online
pictures might not be stained like ours. Spend
time with the microscopes in class and in open
lab.
• You can take pictures with your camera.
Histology: Types of
Questions
• Name this tissue (Simple Squamous
Epithelial Tissue, Blood Connective
Tissue)
• Never forget the primary tissue type in
your answer
• Where can this tissue be found? (lining
of blood vessels)
• Name this structure. (elastic fiber of the
elastic cartilage connective tissue)
• Name this space. (lacunae of the
hyaline cartilage connective tissue)
