ANALYSIS
LANA DEL REY BORN TO DIE

The main image on the front

cover of the album is Lana,
this medium shot shows her
face and her outfit. By using
a medium shot, frames Lana
perfectly in the centre of the
cover, which draws the
audience to her beauty and
voyeuristic feature. This
creates a visual
characteristic of the artist,
which allows the audience to
indulge in. This is seen in
many other indie album
covers, to allow the record
label to create a
representation of the artist
for the audience.

The image shows Lana looking directly and addressing the camera and the
audience with her in the foreground, centred within an outdoor location that
is very simple. She looks like she is putting all of her attention upon the
audience. Allowing her to make a connection with her target audience,
which they can define as being sophisticated and beauty.

By having the artists name in a much

bigger text than the album cover implies
that the artist can sell her album by her
name and image. The font is also very
simple, which means the audience do
not focus on the text, but the image.

However, the genre can

be questioned due to the
artwork of the front cover.
The cover suggests that
she is an indie artist as
there is not a lot going on
in the background.
Compared with a pop
artist, their front cover is
usually very busy and
technologically enhanced
with a computerised feel
to the image and
therefore, the overall
album.

On the back of this digipak, it displays elements

like the track listing. The same simple styled font
has been used for the track listings, which again
creates a visual style. Things like the barcode,
copyright issues and record label can be seen at
the bottom of the album. A feature seen within
the back cover is the change of the colour
scheme. The front cover uses fresh and young
colours, whereas the back displays dominant
and bold colours. The redish orange and white
colour scheme connotes the powerful emotions
and themes heard within the lyrics of hersongs.
The simplicity of the design relates back to the
simplicity of the album. The reason behind not
placing a photograph of Lana on the back cover,
is to allow the audience to focus on the track
listings and to discover the meanings behind the
names of the songs.
