The coral islands of Bermuda are composed
of a layer 200 feet (60 metres) thick of
marine limestone that caps an extinct and
submerged volcanic mountain range rising
more than 14,000 feet (4,300 metres) above
the ocean floor. The limestone surface is
overlain by a shallow layer of fertile soil. The
islands are fringed by coral reefs and have
no lakes or rivers, but the soil is highly
porous, and standing water is not a
problem.

In 1620 Bermuda became a self governing colony, although it continued
to struggle for seven decades thereafter to make a viable economy. The
island was divided into nine administrative areas called parishes and an
administrative leader for each parish was appointed. Find out how the
colony was formed and how the administration was run in Bermuda.
English is the official language in Bermuda.
It was in the Victorian times (mid 1800s) when tourism in Bermuda started
developing for the first time. However, those days Bermuda tourism was
limited for the wealthy &elite class of people who wanted to escape the
winters in North America.
As Somers' men kept retaining British claims on the island, the first official
settlers were sent from England in 1612. So the British were the first to
start settling in Bermuda. But today, there are about 63% blacks, 33%
whites and rest are Asians and other nationals. There is also a good
Portuguese
population

distinguished as having the northernmost
mangrove forests in the Atlantic, which is made
possible by the warm Gulf Streamcurrent.

Bermuda is in thehurricane belt. Located along the Gulf Stream, it is often directly in the
path of hurricanes recurving in the westerlies, although they usually begin to weaken as they
approach Bermuda, whose small size means that directlandfallsof hurricanes are rare.

The only source of fresh water in Bermuda is rainfall, which is collected on roofs and
catchments (or drawn from underground lenses) and stored in tanks. Each dwelling usually
has at least one of these tanks forming part of its foundation. The law requires that each
household collect rainwater that is piped down from the roof of each house.

Architecture style

The archetypical Bermuda house is a low,

squared building with a stepped, white roof
and pastel-painted walls, both of which are
made out of stone. Between roof and wall are a
series of eaves painted a third colour, which is
also used on the wooden shutters of relatively
small windows. Often built on a slope, there is
a set of stairs, wider at the base than at the
top, leading up to a porch or verandah around
the front door. Rare embellishments include a
brick pattern down the corners of the building,
and narrow moulding to highlight features such
as windows.

The roofs are designed to catch water, of which

there is no fresh supply in Bermuda apart from
rain. The walls are designed to restrict damage
from hurricanes and are required by law to be
able to withstand windspeeds of over 100mph
(160km/h). Houses are often given names.
