3. METHODOLOGY
I. Sources of information

Data collected through a survey carried out among companies in the

maritime tourism, e.g. cruise companies, yacht rental, ferry, etc.

Input output tables of Spain 2005, published by the National

of the Spanish economy:

Total Output
Gross Value Added (GVA)
Employment

III. Theoretical framework (1)
What analytical framework is used
INPUT-OUTPUT TABLE
It defines the structure of interrelationships among different
sectors within an economy.

In this study, the Spanish Input output table for 2005, updated for
2008, is used.

III. Theoretical framework (2)
How is the economic effects of maritime tourism determined?
Starting with the
definition of
maritime tourism,
we identify the
affected industries,
using the
information from the
survey. The
economic activity of
these sectors
extends into the
economy through
the inter-sectoral
relationships showed
by IOT.

EMPLOYMENT

TOTAL
OUTPUT
GVA

The more you

produce, the
more
employment you
need

3. METHODOLOGY
III. Theoretical framework (3)
What kinds of economic effects happen?

DIRECT EFFECT
In sectors related with
maritime tourism

INDUCED EFFECT
As a consecuence of the
increase in employment
and income in the whole
economy.

INDIRECT EFFECT
Supplier sectors, of maritime
tourism, that will have to increase
their production

TOTAL EFFECT

1. GDP of
maritime
tourism: 3.271
million in
Spain (2008)

2. Distribution

among the sectors

of maritime
transport and
auxiliary transport
activities, travel
agencies, etc.

These data are

transferred to
the IOT to
calculate the
impact

3. From this
division and
through the
input-output
analysis,
indirect and
induced effects
are generated

4. SEA SECTOR IN SPAIN

I. Comparison with other maritime sectors

Total effect weight of maritime tourism represents 0,75% of total GVA of

Spain.

Multiplier shows the amount of euros generated in the economy (total effect)
for every euro spent (direct effect), as a consecuence of economic activity of related sectors (indirect effect)
and the increase of income and employment (induced effect)

Interpretation: For every

tourism, 2,5 euros are
generated in the Spanish
economy
