ELECTRICAL SHOCK:

FIRST AID

EMC

INITIAL ACTION
REMOVE ELECTRICITY FROM VICTIM
OR VICTIM FROM ELECTRICITY.
USING A WOODEN CANE, SAFETY PROBE
OR ELECTRICAL SAFETY GLOVES
SECURE POWER SOURCE, WHICH
COULD BE BREAKER OR SWITCH.
WHEN IN DOUBT, SECURE SHORETIE.

EMC

WHAT TO DO NEXT?
Call EMS and treat for
shock.
IF FACE IS PALE,
RAISE THE TAIL.
IF FACE IS RED,
RAISE THE HEAD.

Insure victim has

pulse, Electrical shock
can cause Cardiac
Arrest or Respiratory
failure.
EMC

CPR - BASICS
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a
combination of chest compressions and
rescue breathing.
REMEMBER YOUR ABCS
AIRWAY
BREATHING
CIRCULATION
EMC

CPR - AIRWAY
Ensure airway is open.
Finger sweep mouth To
ensure food, chew,
tongue or dentures are
clear.

IF NOT, START
ABDOMINAL
THRUSTS

EMC

ABDOMINAL THURSTS

Straddle victim's legs facing head of victim.

Place heel of hand approx. 2" above navel.
Administer 610 quick upwards thrust.
Recheck airway-mouth sweep.
Repeat as necessary.

EMC

CPR- BREATHING
ONCE AIRWAY IS
CLEAR:
DETERMINE IF
VICTIM IS
BREATHING ON
THERE OWN.

Look, Listen and Feel.

a. Look for the rise
in the victim's chest.
b. Listen for the air
exchange when
mouths separate.
c. Feel the air
exchange.
EMC

RESCUE BREATHING
The process of breathing for a victim by Artificial
Respiration.
Various methods of administrating Artificial
Respiration.
MouthtoMouth. Accomplished by placing your mouth
over victim's mouth
MouthtoNose. Accomplished by placing your mouth
over victim's nose.

NOTE: Ensure victim is not breathing and call

EMS .
EMC

PRECEDURES FOR
MOUTH TO - MOUTH
1.
2.
3.

Place victim on back. Preferably a hard surface.

Position yourself beside the victim's head
Clear victims mouth of foreign items.

4.

This doesn't include dentures, they can aid in attaining a tight

seal.

Open airway using the Head tilt/jawchin lift method.

a. Two fingers under jawbone.
b. Place other hand on forehead.
c. Gently push on forehead and lift on jaw. This will
hyperextend the neck and open the airway in most cases.
EMC

MOUTH-TO-MOUTH CONT.
5.

6.
7.
8.
9.

Seal victim's mouth with your mouth. At same time

pinch nose closed.
a. Alternative: Use a Pocket mask with a one way
flapper valve.
Give victim two quick breathes; Adults: full size breathes
Look, Listen and Feel.
Breathes should be given at a rate of 1 every 5 seconds
or 1214 per minute.
Approximately every 13 minutes check for a pulse. If
not present commence CPR.

EMC

CPR- CIRCULATION
NO PULSE ???
Purpose Of CPR
1.To keep lungs supplied with oxygen.
2.To keep blood circulating.
a. Moves oxygen through body.
b. Brain cells die in 46 minutes without no
oxygen.
EMC

CPR- ONE MAN RESPONSE

1.
2.
3.
4.

Check for response.

Establish airway.
a. Look, listen and feel for air exchange.
If not breathing, begin Rescue Breathing.
After giving 2 quick breaths, check for pulse.
a. Check at Carotid artery near Adams apple.
DO NOT use thumb to take pulse, the thumb has a pulse of its own.

5.
6.

Position victim on hard surface.

Rescuer should be positioned adjacent to victim's chest.
EMC

CPR- ONE MAN RESPONSE

7. Locate the proper position of rescuer's hands.
a. Follow rib cage up to the lower end of the breastbone
(xiphoid process). The xiphoid process is very weak and
pressure should not be applied there. if broken it could
rupture liver.
b. Measure two fingers up from xiphoid process and place
heel of hand on lower breastbone and place other hand on
top of the first.
c. Bring your shoulders directly over hands. Keep arms
straight, thrust down rocking at hips in smooth rhythm.
d. Release pressure immediately. Compression and release
should be equal in duration. If hands come away from
chest refind hand position.
EMC

CPR- ONE MAN RESPONSE

8. Compressions.
a. Depth should be 1 1/22 inches deep.
b. Repetition of 80100 compressions per minute.
c. Ratio of compressions to breaths 15 to 2.
d. Counting should be quick such as 1 and 2 and 3.

9. Keep your fingers away from the rib cage to avoid

fractures. Fingers may be interlocked or grab wrist
of one with the other.
10. Every 23 minutes check pulse.
EMC

When to stop one man CPR.

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

When you are relieved by EMS.

When victim revives.
When doctor pronounces victim dead.
When you can commence two man CPR.
Exhaustion.

EMC

Techniques for two man CPR.

1.All steps for one man CPR are used with
the exception of the following:
a. Position of rescuers.
(1) One rescuer is adjacent to chest.
(2) The other is adjacent to the
victim's head on opposite sides from each
other.
EMC

ELECTRICAL BURN
TREATMENT
Check for multiple burn sites (usually has
entrance and exit burns).
Cover all burns with dry, loose dressings
and bandage.
