HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

1940- Nanay Coring and her husband founded National Bookstore,

With a startup capital of P211 (equivalent to about P15,047 in
current pesos when adjusted for inflation) where they built their
first retail bookshop there, selling books as well as soap, candies,
and slippers. .
1948- A TYPHOON destroyed the store and damaged all the
merchandise, then eventually rebuild
1950s- the company later acquired the national franchise
forHallmark Cards. It was also at that time that they began a
publishing programme with the assistance of international
publishers such asMcGraw-Hill,Prentice Hall,Lippincott,
andAddison-Wesley.

1970s- Acquired space in shopping centres that had opened

inCubaoandMakati
1990s- had over 50 branches nationwide.
Present- has 19472 branches (includingNBS Bestsellers) all
over the Philippines,Metrobooksa subsidiary store in

I wish I could be a good example to them

(entrepreneurs). Money does not come easy.
You have to work hard for it, and also, you
have to love your work, thats important. And
you have to go to school to study, because
you have to learn more. If you want to earn
more, you have to know more, and you have
to read more, Nanay Coring stressed.
