INTRODUCTION
• The Americas are the lands of the Western
Hemisphere or New World.
• The Americas cover 8.3% of the earth’s total
surface area & about 14% of the human
population.

• The Americas may alternatively be referred to


as America or The United States of America.

• America is bound by the Atlantic ocean


on the east & on the west by the
Pacific ocean.
• It occupies a territory of 9,522,0572
sq.km primarily in the mid latitude
region of the North American
continental landmass.

INTRODUCTION

EARLY AMERICA
At the height of most recent Ice Age about 35000years
ago,much of the worlds water was locked up in the vast
continental ice sheets.
The first Americans crossed the land bridge from Asia & were
believed to have stayed in what is now Alaska for thousand
of years. They then moved south into the land that was to
become the United States.
WORLD WAR I, 1920s PROSPERITY, THE
GREAT DEPRESSION

 War in Europe in 1914- with Germany & Austria-Hungary


fighting Britain,France,Italy&Russia-affected U.S interest
from the start.

German submarine attacks were deadly.

The efforts of more than 17,50000 U.S troops played a


decisive role in the defeat of the German & Austro-Hungarian
alliance.

The immediate postwar period was one of labor interest


and racial tensions.
THE NEW DEAL AND WORLD WAR II

 In early 1930s President Franklin Roosevelt proposed a


“New deal”- a plan designed to lift American out of the
Great Depression.

 United states imposed an embargo on the one commodity


Japan needed above all others-oil-and demanded that it
withdraw from territories it conquered.

 Japan refused & on Dec 7,1941 it carried out a devastating


attack on the U.S pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor,Hawaii. The
United States declared war on Japan. Germany, & Italy by
then allies of Japan declared war on United States.
