Apple is committed to

software and internet
offerings.

Samsung
Samsung was founded in

1969 in Suwon, originally

manufacturing electronic
appliances such as TVs,
calculators, refrigerators,
air conditioners and
washers. Its the global
market leader in more than
60 products.

REASONS OF CONFLICT

Apple argued that it had lost significant profits in

Smartphone market to its most significant competitor,
Samsung, due to copied features by Samsung inc.
But Samsung insisted that consumers had purchased its
phones for other reasons, such as Samsungs bigger
screens and cheaper price and other features.

Given that Samsung is one of Apples

biggest suppliers, the companies have

a strong incentive to move beyond
their conflict and build on their
ongoing partnership.
Yet court-ordered mediation

between the CEOs of the two

companies in 2012 ended in impasse.
And the disputants continue to fight
in courts worldwide.

Arguments
The decision to mediate

between Apple and Samsung is

scheduled for March or April of 2016.
The parties attended a full-day

negotiation session with the mediator

during the first week in February but
they did not reach an agreement at that
session.

Resolution
The March case initially had

to deal with more than 25

products and 25 patents. The
court has instructed the two
parties to limit the scope of
the cases, so Apple ended with
five patent claims and 10
infringing products against
Samsung and Samsung with 4
patent claims and 10
infringing products against
Apple.

The Verdict
After months of anticipation, the jury
finally reached a verdict of : $1 billion for
patent infringement to be paid by Samsung
for copying the apples revolutionary
designs for the computer tablet Ipad and
Smartphone Iphone.
The jury also found Apple guilty of
infringing one of Samsungs patents, and to
pay US$6 million of damages to Samsung

Conclusion
The two companies are also battling

each other in similar patent cases in

different parts of the globe such as
the Netherlands, Germany, and
Australia.
The legal teams of both companies

are now gearing up to meet with

each other at the trial set and at
other conflict resolution mean such
as mediation in 2016.
