Application of FlexA

1. Different virtual addresses are used for the signaling to be transmitted to MSC, and CS
to MGW. We can also use one virtual address to achieve the transmission, but usually
two virtual addresses are used for commercial networking.
2. If the routing switch supports BFD function, the static route between the IPI at iBSC
side and the routing switch should be enabled to enable BFD. If the MSC and MGW at
CN support the BFD function, configure the BFD multi-hop conversation between the
IPA virtual address and the CN.
3. If the routing switch supports OAM function, enable it.

Internal Only

Suggestions
1. IPI adopts the load-sharing mode.
2. Create sub-interface on the IPI interface; isolate user plane from
control plane with VLAN.
3. VLAN/BFD/OAM/LACP/SUPPER VLAN are supported.
4. IPA supports the configuration of more than one virtual address,
which must be configured in the same network segment. This is
decided by the actual situation on site (more than one MSC or
MGW).
5. For IPA networking, the VLAN sub-port ranges 1-15, which is
sufficient for application, because there are few core networks to be
integrated with the iBSC.

Internal Only

Application of FlexA

1. IPI adopts the load-sharing mode.

2. Create sub-interface on the IPI interface; isolate user plane from control plane with
VLAN.
3. Use DSCP to ensure QoS.
4. For IPA networking, the VLAN sub-port ranges 1-16, which is sufficient for
application, because there are few core networks to be integrated with the iBSC.

Common Networking Mode at Gb Interface

Internal Only

Application of FlexGb

1. The master/standby mode is not supported by IPGB. The load-sharing

mode must be configured.
2. If the routing switch supports BFD/OAM, enable the BFD/OAM
between the IPGB and routing switch.
3. If the core network supports BFD, configure the multi-hop
conversation between the virtual address of GB interface and the virtual
address of SGSN.

Bandwidth Allocation Principles for FE Site

For

GSM network, each TRX uses 0.2M bandwidth.

According to the site configuration:
Configure 2M bandwidth, when less than 10 TRXs are configured;
Configure 3M bandwidth, when 11-15 TRXs are configured;
Configure 4M bandwidth, when 16-29 TRXs are configured.
If

the PS traffic is large in the site, configure a larger

bandwidth (>4M).

Internal Only

FE Interface Board
Front board: BIPI
Rear board: RMNIC
Configuration suggestions:
One board has four FE ports and each of them can process 60M traffic.
The average bandwidth for each site is 3M. Therefore, the sites connected
to one FE port should be less than 20.
One FE port can be configured with at most four addresses of different
network segments, but it is suggested that only one address be configured
for one FE port.
The FE port address can be 10.BSCID.xxy.254. xx represents the No.
of the IPBB board on the BSC (sequence: main/auxiliary rack,
upper/lower shelf, left/right slot); y represents the No. of port on IPBB.

GE Interface Board
Front board: GIPI
Rear board: RGER
Configuration suggestions:
One board has one GE port, which can process 60MM traffic. The
average bandwidth for each site is 3M. Therefore, the sites connected to
one FE port should be less than 200.
For optical fiber access, use the optical port of the front board. For
electrical port access, use the electrical port of the rear board.
The GE port address can be 10.BSCID.xx.254. xx represents the No.
of the IPBB board on the BSC (sequence: main/auxiliary rack,
upper/lower shelf, left/right slot).

RPU Abis IP
Function: used to establish link with SDR
Feature: virtual address
Principle: fixed mask 255.255.255.255
IP of IPBB interface board
Feature: real address
Principle: It is in the same network segment as the peer-end
router interface;
Its subnet mask is 255.255.255.252
Gateway address of the base station
It is set on the VLAN subnet of the router.

Internal Only

Planning of the Base Station Address

Class-C address segment
Network segment 1: 10.9.1.0/24 (subnet mask: 255.255.255.0)
Base station address range: 10.9.1.1~10.9.1.253 (253 IPs in total)
Gateway address: 10.9.1.254
VLAN ID: 1
Network segment 2: 10.9.2.0/24 (subnet mask: 255.255.255.0)
Base station address range: 10.9.2.1~10.9.2.253 253 IP
Gateway address: 10.9.2.254
VLAN ID: 2
Network segment N:10.9.N.254 (0 N 255)
Base station address range: 10.9.N.1~10.9.N.253 (253 IPs in total)
Gateway address: 10.9.N.254
VLAN ID: N

Internal Only

Planning of the Base Station Address

Class-C address segment
Advantages: simple classification, easy to understand
Disadvantages: too large network segment space, too many
sites in the same VLAN, difficult to control the broadcast
storm
Applicable scenes: the networks with simple structures and
low requirement from the control of broadcast storm

Internal Only

Planning of the Base Station Address

Customized network segment
Narrow the range of class-C network segment by using the subnet
masks.
Based on the feature of the subnet, the network segment and the number
of IPs available are fixed.

Internal Only

Planning of the Base Station Address

Customized network segment
If the subnet mask /30 is selected, after one gateway address is
deducted, only one address can be reserved.
Network segment 1: 10.9.1.0/30 (subnet mask: 255.255.255.252)
Base station address range: 10.9.1.1
Gateway address: 10.9.1.2
VLAN ID: 1
Network segment 2: 10.9.1.4/28 (subnet mask: 255.255.255.252)
Base station address range: 10.9.1.3
Gateway address: 10.9.1.4
VLAN ID: 2

Internal Only

Planning of the Base Station Address

Customized network segment
Advantages: few sites in one VLAN, good control over the influence of
broadcast storm
Disadvantages: many gateways need to be configured, which is
inconvenient for management.
Applicable scenes: the networks with a modest number of sites

Internal Only

Planning of the Base Station Address

Application of supervlan and subvlan
The division of network segments is the same as that for the first type of
class-C network segment. The sites in one class-C network segment use
the same gateway. The class-C network segment corresponds with one
supervlan. Create a number (N) of subvlans in the supervlan. N is the
number of sites in the supervlan. Configure the subvlanID on the sites.

Internal Only

Planning of the Base Station Address

Application of supervlan and subvlan
Network segment: 10.9.1.0/24 (supervlan)
Base station address: 10.9.1.1
Gateway address: 10.9.1.254
VLAN ID: 1 (subvlan)
Network segment: 10.9.1.0/24 (supervlan)
Base station address: 10.9.1.2
Gateway address: 10.9.1.254
VLAN ID: 2 (subvlan)
Network segment: 10.9.1.0/24 (supervlan)
Base station address: 10.9.1.N (0 N 253)
Gateway address: 10.9.1.254
VLAN ID: N (subvlan)

Internal Only

Planning of the Base Station Address

Application of supervlan and subvlan
Advantages: For the L2 switching network at the sites, each site is isolated
in one subvlan, which can effectively suppress the influence of broadcast
strom. Besides, for the router side, limiting the subvlans in supervlan
makes the sites in one class-C network segment use the same gateway,
which reduces the load of the router and enforces the management of
gateway.
Applicable scenes: the networks with complicated structures, a large
number of sites, especially in the co-site situation of 2G and 3G

Internal Only

Typical Application

1. Use DSCP, and configure the mapping between DSCP and COS, to guarantee
the QoS.
2. If the L3 switch supports BFD/OAM function, enable it between the IPBB and
the switch.
3. The multi-hop conversation between the IP Abis virtual address and the SDR is
not recommended to be configured.
4. Normally both the L3 switch and L2 switch will be used. Divide different
VLANs on L3 switch and configure IP and static route on it; connect L2 switch to
the sites.
5. Adopt load-sharing mode for IPBB.
6. iBSC supports the supervlan function, but it is not recommended to be enabled.

Virtual IP
In BSC Function->IP Property, configure the IPABIS and OMCB channel IP
(the operation & maintenance IP of RPU on Abis interface). We can separate the
service and operation & maintenance on the Abis interface. If the two IPs above
are the same, combine the service and operation & maintenance .

Internal Only

OMC IP
In BSC Function->Basic Property, configure OMP IP and OMC subnet
mask. The OMP IP must be the same as the one configured on the OMP
board. If they are not the same, synchronize the data and reset the master
and standby OMP board, so that the IP in OMCR will replace the IP on
the OMP board.
Besides, we also need to configure the OMCR interface IP, which must be
in the same network segment as the OMP IP.

Basic Principles
OMP: communicates with the background, i.e. OMCR network segment
SBCX: uses three ports-OMP1 OMC1 OMC2
1.OMP1: communicates with the foreground, i.e. OMCR network segment
2.OMC1: external network maintenance, i.e. EMS network segment
3.OMC2: connects to the OMCB network segment
GIPI: connects to the OMCB network segment

Internal Only

OMCR Network Segment

OMCR network segment: the network segment of the OMP and OMCR
server
Planning principles: The OMP and OMCR server can be interconnected
through L2 switching network (consisting of switches); the IP of each port
must be in the same network segment.
For example, the OMP IP is 10.5.5.1/29, and the OMCR server IP is
10.5.5.2/29. Other IPs cannot be planned in the same network segment.

Internal Only

OMCB Channel

Internal Only

OMCB Network Segment

OMCB network segment: the network segment of IPBB and OMCR
server. The IPBB only forwards the data of OMCB channel.
Planning principles: The IPBB and OMCR server can be interconnected
through L2 switching network (consisting of switches); the IP of each port
must be in the same network segment.
For example, the IPBB IP is 0.5.5.9/29, and the OMCR server IP is
10.5.5.10/29. Other IPs cannot be planned in the same network segment.

Internal Only

EMS Network Segment

EMS network segment: the network segment of the EMS server
(Minos server). We can log in to the EMS server through the
network segment from the operation & maintenance terminal.
Planning principles: The EMS client, OMM server, and EMS server
can be interconnected through L2 switching network (consisting of
switches); the IP of each port must be in the same network segment.
For example: OMM1 server IP is 172.22.16.1/24, OMM2 server IP
is 172.22.16.2/24, and EMS server IP is 172.22.16.3/24. The
address range of EMS client address is 172.22.16.10/24172.22.16.250/24. Other IPs cannot be planned in the same network
segment. The network segment can be used for other purposes, like
providing an IP for the alarm box.

Internal Only

EMS Network Segment

Internal Only

Three-in-one Solution
In the actual physical networking process, we can combine the three networks
(OMCR, OMCB, EMS) into one, and then differentiate their network
segments using VLAN.

MAC Address Planning

When configuring the FE/GE ports for the IPBB, IPI, and IPGB boards, we
need to set the MAC address according to the following methods:
1.Acquire it from the labels on the boards.
2.Set it manually. The MAC value must be within the range (00-D0-D0-A000-00,00-D0-D0-A0-9F-FF), and it cannot repeat the MAC of other ports.

Internal Only

Configuration of Remote LMT

Connect the LMT client to the OMCB network segment. The interface
network card can use the address in the network segment of OMCB
server. We can configure the route to the base station on the LMT
client, with its outlet pointing to the interface address of the IPBB
board (in the same network segment as the OMCB server).
By running the LMT software, input the service IP of the base station,
then we can remotely manage the base station, like commissioning the
base station at the near end.
If the remote LMT client is configured with two network cards, access
the other network card to the EMS network segment, so that the EMS
client can connect to the LMT client through remote desktop, and run
the LMT software to manage the base station.
