Effect of Sensible Cooling/Heating

on the Psychromtric Properties of Air

Example

Calculate the load on the heating coil used for heating 1.5 m3/s of moist air at
DBT= 21 oC, WBT=15 oC by 20 oC. If the water is working fluid that enters the
coil at 85 oC, and leaves at 75 oC. Calculate the mass flow rate of the water.

3- Evaporative Cooling

Saturation Efficiency (Humidifier Efficiency)

Example

1.5 m3 of air at DBT=45 oC, WBT=31 oC, passes through an air washer, if the
Saturation efficiency is 90%, Calculate:
a) The exit condition of air.
b) The quantity of the make-up water

Solution

From Chart

Steam Injection

Example

Steam at 100 oC is injected to air stream at DBT=21 oC, RH=50% at a rate

of 1 kg to 150 kg of dry air; what is the final condition of the air.

Solution

Cooling and Dehumidification

The ratio AB/ADP is known as the coil contact factor or coil efficiency

AB
TA TB
CF

A ADP TA ADP

EXAMPLE

Outdoor air at DBT=32 oC, WBT=22 oC, is cooled and dehumidified to 16 oC by

a cooling coil having a surface temperature of 5 oC before entering the
conditioned space; Find the properties of outdoor and supply air and calculate
the coil CF, Coil Capacity and the condensed water per 1 kg of dry air.
SOLUTION

The process on the psychrometric chart

Adiabatic Mixing
In most cases, the outdoor fresh air is mixed with the re-circulated air comes
from the conditioned in air handling unit (AHU), this process is carried out
adiabatically so the AHU must be insulated well to prevent the heat loss. The
following figure shows two streams of air of masses m1 at condition (1) and m2
at condition (2) and resulted mixture has the mass m3 at condition (3)

The mass balance of air

The mass balance of water vapor

The energy balance

The point (3) can be determined from the following equations

Example

Moist air stream at DBT=60 oC, WBT=32 oC is mixed adiabatically with another moist
air stream at DBT=5 oC, WBT=0.5 oC. If the masses of dry air in both streams are 3 kg
, 2 kg respectively. Find the enthalpy, specific humidity, and dry bulb temperature of air
mixture.

Solution

Example

1m3/s of outdoor moist air at DBT= -1 oC, 100%; RH is mixed with 2 m3/s
of recirculated air at DBT= 22 oC, 50% RH. Draw the process on the
psychrometric chart and find the mixing point by calculations and then find
the properties (RH,w,h,v) of the mixing point.
