Emergency Medical Services Institute

“To provide an educational environment that


challenges and inspires caring people to become
the best emergency medical care providers. To
instill a culture of compassionate patient care and
preservation of human dignity while meeting the
diverse needs of our community.”
Santa Fe Community College became recognized as a State
EMS training center in February 2006 and then became fully
independent in the fall of 2006. And is one of only four other
paramedic training programs in New Mexico.

The Beginning….

A Collaboration……
1. Condense the contact length into a more "Fire Academy" model.

2. Allow and clinicals and internship to be service driven.

3. Establish a modular format to paramedic training.

4. Address the shortage of qualified paramedic instructors.

5. Established decentralized paramedic programs.

6. Services agree to provide in-kind contributions and financial


contributions in the form of instructors, equipment, and classroom
space in partnership with teaching institutions to meet current and
projected needs.

7. Invite teaching institutions to a future meeting to discuss these


issues and how we may collective collaborate to address this
significant need.
The Need Grows…..
Northern New Mexico Fire Chief's Council there is a current, perpetual need for
50-60 paramedics between the nine council members alone. This did not
include services such as Espanola, Taos and other private services.

"Employment of emergency medical technician and paramedics is expected to


grow much faster than average for all occupations through 2014. And the
percentage of growth is expected to be at 34-40% through 2014." (U.S.
Department Job Outlook Handbook 2006).
A “Snapshot” of the Institute
There is an average of 68 students enrolled at the
institute per semester with the paramedic class size
being 16.

Our enrollment is up over 60% since the spring of 2006.

Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Santa


Fe and are now their primary training providers.

Santa Fe County is also utilizing us as the primary


training providers and we are currently working on a
model to meet their needs.
Partnerships are being formed….
Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury
conference which is the first time this
has ever been done in the capital.

The State Health Department EMS


Bureau is partnering with the Institute in
examining different educational delivery
models.

been used at all levels.
The Institute is working
with St. Vincent’s to
foster other
opportunities.

The Institute has taken the


lead in developing a
clinical model for all EMS
training and working
with Region One in
utilization of this into
training requirements
state-wide.

- COAEMSP Accreditation
- Second paramedic class starts in July
- Paramedic degree program
- Development of a public safety degree and explore
the possibility of Emergency Management
- Develop the fire sciences program
- Continue to be customer, constituent, student
driven.
