You asked your students to read a passage
in a book. Afterwards you ask them, "Did
you all understand that?" The chances are
that one or two students will say, "Yes",
some more will nod their heads, some will
mumble something and one or two say
nothing. As a teacher you might assume
that everyone has understood and move
on; but can you be sure? Did the answers
to, "Did you all understand that?" really
tell you anything?

They should have short and simple answers.
It pays to check just one concept at a time.
Good concept questions are difficult to think
of on the spot so its a good idea to prepare
our questions in advance.
Direct CCQs to specific students, not always
to the whole class, the same students, or
the best students; cover as many students
as possible
Use pictures, realia, miming, synonyms,
antonyms, the white board, and time and
tense in CCQs

concept check every new item. In
many cases, function and meaning
are clear because the language has
been presented in a meaningful
context.
