Warm Up
Although not a formal movement, the Black Power
movement marked a turning point in black-white relations in
the United States and also in how blacks saw themselves.
The movement was hailed by some as a positive and
proactive force aimed at helping blacks achieve full equality
with whites, but it was reviled by others as a militant,
sometimes violent faction whose primary goal was to drive a
wedge between whites and blacks. Websoure
Black Power often involved radical activism and sometimes
militancy . It can be viewed as running contrary to the
ideals and beliefs of MLK & the SCLC.
How do you think it drove a wedge between whites and
blacks? Explain!
2. Do you think the legacy of Black Power is seen today as
positive or negative? Explain!
CHALLENGE! Develop a brief logical argument speaking out
against Black Power. Consider the information in green when
forming the basis of your argument.

Exemplar Paragraph (SEEC Format):
While many of the goals of the Black Power movement
were admirable, the methods used to achieve these
goals only achieved some of the progress of the AfricanAmerican Civil Rights movement. [1 pt] The radical
activism of the Black Panther party and other Black
Power groups served to mobilize many progressives,
particularly African Americans. [1 pt] For example, the
demands to be excluded from the Vietnam War helped
war protests grow large, aiding the Civil Rights
movement. However, many standpatters would have
been turned off by demands for monetary reparations
and the arming of all African Americans. (Doc.1) [ 2
pts.] Therefore, this radical activism was an important
part of the Civil Rights Movement, but more moderate
approaches will also be essential in advancing the cause
of African American Civil Rights[1 pt.]
