movement marked a turning point in black-white relations in
the United States and also in how blacks saw themselves.

with whites, but it was reviled by others as a militant,
sometimes violent faction whose primary goal was to drive a
wedge between whites and blacks. Websoure

Topic Civil Rights Act of 1964

Book: A Patriots History of the United States
Author: L. Schweikart and M. Allen

Separatists led by Stokely Carmichael

demanded Black Power! and urged blacks
to start their own businesses, schools, and
militias. Panther leaders fell far short of King,
however, when it came to having either character
or courage: Huey Newton went to prison for
killing a police officer; Eldridge Cleaver left the
country; and evidence surfaced revealing that
other Panthers had executed their own members
suspected of being informants. King might have
been able to step into the chasm (gap) separating
the radicals and the moderates if he had lived.

Topic Civil Rights Act of 1964

Book: A Peoples History of the United States
Author: Howard Zinn

Black Power was given the new

sloganan expression of distrust of any
progress given or conceded by whites, a
rejection of paternalism (protectionism). Few
blacks (or whites) knew the statement of the
white writer Aldous Huxley: Liberties are not
given, they are taken. But the idea was there,
in Black Power. Also, a pride in race, an
insistence on black independence, and often,
on black separation to achieve this
independence.

While many of the goals of the Black Power movement
were admirable, the methods used to achieve these
goals only achieved some of the progress of the AfricanAmerican Civil Rights movement. [1 pt] The radical
activism of the Black Panther party and other Black
Power groups served to mobilize many progressives,
particularly African Americans. [1 pt] For example, the
demands to be excluded from the Vietnam War helped
war protests grow large, aiding the Civil Rights
movement. However, many standpatters would have
been turned off by demands for monetary reparations
and the arming of all African Americans. (Doc.1) [ 2
