Power Plant
Design, Installation and Operation of

Definition of terms
Open Cycle
A thermodynamic cycle in which new mass
enters the boundaries of the system and spent
exhaust leaves it.
Gas Turbine
An internal combustion engine that operates

with rotary rather than reciprocating motion.

Power Plant
An installation where electrical power is
generated for distribution.

Abstract

This design shows a design, installation and operation of 500

MW Open Cycle Gas Turbine Power Plant. The problem that

comes in the study are the following:
The quantity of air circulation of 500 MW Open Cycle Gas Turbine

Power Plant
The power output of the turbine
The fraction of the turbine output required to drive the
compressor
The thermal efficiency of the cycle

The study shows a result of:

977.16 Kg/s quality of air circulation for 500 MW Open Cycle Gas
Turbine power plant
831.76 MW power output of the turbine
0.399 Fraction of the turbine required to drive the compressor
53% thermal efficiency of the cycle

500 MW to an electric generator

Summary
The Design, Installation and Operation of 500

MW Open Cycle Gas Turbine Power Plant have

determined the following objectives:
977.16 Kg/s quality of air circulation for 500 MW

Open Cycle Gas Turbine power plant

831.76 MW power output of the turbine
0.399 Fraction of the turbine required to drive
the compressor
53% thermal efficiency of the cycle

Conclusion
The researchers concluded that the

assumption of less than 50% thermal

efficiency of the cycle is not true because
according to the researchers data analysis,
the thermal efficiency of the cycle is 53%
which is more than 50%.

Recommendation
Having undertaken this study; presented, analyzed

and interpreted the findings, the researchers

propose the following recommendations:
That there should be a research for the solution of all

this disadvantages that a open cycle gas turbine

power plant has:
The part load efficiency of the open cycle plant decreases
rapidly as the considerable percentage of power developed
by the turbine is used to drive the compressor.
The system is sensitive to the component efficiency;
particularly that of compressor. The open
cycle plant is sensitive to changes in the atmospheric air
temperature, pressure and humidity.

The open-cycle gas turbine plant has high air rate

compared to the other cycles, therefore, it
results in increased loss of heat in the exhaust gases
and large diameter ductwork is necessary.
It is essential that the dust should be prevented from
entering into the compressor in order to
minimise erosion and depositions on the blades and
passages of the compressor and turbine and so
impairing their profile and efficiency. The deposition
of the carbon and ash on the turbine blades is not
at all desirable as it also reduces the efficiency of
the turbine.
