WHAT IS MEMS . .?

MEMS or Micro electro mechanical systems

is a technology that combines electrical
and mechanical components together on
chip to produce a system of miniature
dimensions

COMPONENTS OF MEMS

MEMS system mainly consists of

- Micro Sensors
- Micro Actuators
-Microelectronics
-Micro structures

WHY MEMS ?

Smaller in size
Have a lower power consumption
More sensitive to input variations
Cheaper due to mass production

USE OF MEMS AS
ACTUATORS
An actuator is a type of motor that is
responsible for moving or controlling
a mechanism or system.
FOR EX: It is operated by a source of
energy, typically electric current,
hydraulic fluid pressure, or
pneumatic pressure, and converts
that energy into motion

USE OF MEMS IN SENSORS

WHAT IS A SENSOR:
A device used
to measure a physical quantity such
as temperature and convert it into an
electronic signal of some kind (e.g a
voltage)
EX:
1) Accelerometers
2) Projectors

WHERE DO WE FIND
MEMS ?
AUTOMOBILES-Accelerometers
PROJECTORS - DLP(digital light
processing )
PRINTERS - High DPI inkjet printers
CELLPHONES-Microphones used in cell
phones

IN ACCELROMETERS
Why MEMS accelerometers are used
instead of conventional
accelerometers..?
made of bulky and heavy metal parts
require high operating voltage
needs careful maintenance
highly expensive

accelerometers using MEMS

technology is used in deploying
airbags
In mobiles it is used for navigation
In medicine used for activity
detection for pacemakers

IN PROJECTORS

MEMS technology is used in projectors using DLP

Technology
Using MEMS technology 2 million micro-mirrors
are placed in a pixel which of one fifth of width of
hair
DLP chip is also found in embedded applications
such as 3D scanning, spectroscopy, machine
vision, and medical applications.

MEMS IN MILITARY OPERATIONS

An array of MEMS sensors spread on the ocean
floor could detect the presence of enemy
submarines.
MEMS sensors (pressure sensors, accelerometers
etc.) are being used in precision targeting .
MEMS sensors in torpedoes are responsible for
1) Detonating the torpedo at the right time
2) Prevent any premature explosion

THE BIG QUESTION ?

IS MEMS REALLY
NECESSARY?

MEMS promises to be an effective

technique of producing sensors of high
quality, at lower costs.
Thus we can conclude that the MEMS can
create a proactive computing world which
helps to acquire and act on real time data
about physical environment helping to
improve lives and enabling people to
become more productive
