Membrane Bioreactor Technology

Membrane Bioreactor Technology is based on Biological
membrane separation.

Treatment followed by

The Membranes replace the settlement stage in conventional

activated-sludge

systems and effectively revolutionize the process.

The separation of biomass from treated water using membranes provides ltered

quality nal efuent, offering possibilities of re- use.

It allows very high biomass mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations

to be developed in the bioreactor without the detrimental effects usually associated

with traditional settlement techniques.

What is Membrane?
It is an intervening phase separating two phases and for acting as an active or

passive barrier to the transport of matter between phases.

How it works ?
Membrane ber have billions of microscopic pores on the surface .
The pores form a barrier to impurities, while allowing pure water molecules to pass.
Water is drawn through the pores using gentle suction.

Process Configuration
There are two configurations:
1)

Internal or Submerged Configuration.

Membrane modules are directly

installed in the activated sludge reactor
vessel.
The permeate or effluent is sucked out
of the membrane module with the help
of a permeate pump and the suspended
solids fall back into the basin.

2) External configuration.

Membrane modules are located

outside the reactor basin.
The mixed liquor from the reactor is
pumped into the external membrane
module.
Require less membrane area compared
to submerged MBRs

Working Theory.
Normally system are built with two different compartments.
The rst section is the screening stage where the wastewater enters the unit.
Here heavy solids are first separated subsequently. The initial screening is of high

importance as the larger molecules will not trap the surface of the membrane and
lead to fouling.
In the second compartment. the biological process takes place involving vigorous

agitation.
Air bubbles generated from a blower system clean the surface of the membrane to

prevent build up of material on the and also to provide sufficient oxygen

concentration for biological action that supports growth of bacteria.

ADVANTAGES OF MBR OVER OTHER TREATMENT PROCESSES

High mixed liquor concentrations in the reactor allow wastewaters to be treated

efficiently at long SRTs, minimizing biomass yield.

More compact biological reactors are possible.
Slower growing organisms, such as nitrifying bacteria and those capable of degrading

complex organics, can be readily maintained in MBRs.

Eliminates concern for changing biomass settling characteristics.
In addition its easy to operate and maintain.
The MBR process is considered flexible since both the hydraulic retention time (HRT)

and the sludge retention time (SRT) can be controlled independently

membrane system -replacing traditional clarifiers.

BENEFITS
Potential Reuse of effluent water .
Smaller bioprocess footprint.
Substantial reduction of effluent TSS.
Eliminate settling challenges associated with a clarifier.

POTENTIAL LIMITATIONS.
