Task Analysis

My project is to design and make an MP3 player. I need to decide

who I should design it for, so I will have to look at a range of
different existing products and analyse them in detail to understand
the features they have and to help me understand who buys them
already.

I need to investigate what smart materials are and how I might use
them in my project.

Because the electronics are small I can make my shape any style I
like, but I could use a theme to help produce design ideas.
I need to investigate different ways I might manufacture my product
as a working prototype so it can be made commercially in large
quantities.

What colour is it?

What shape is it?
What texture does the surface have? Is it smooth or
rough? Are any edges sharp or rounded?
Does the product look attractive? Why?
Who might use the product?
Why would they use this rather than another similar
product?
How much does it cost to buy?
Is it good value?
Is it environmentally friendly?
Sustainability?
How does your product relate to the 6 Rs?
Is it made from recycled materials? Can it be recycled?
What size is it?
How long, wide and tall is it? (Hint: Measure it and write
down the sizes!)
Why is it this size?
If the size was made bigger or smaller, would it work
better?
How has the user been protected from harm when using it?
Are there any sharp edges, small parts that could be
swallowed, loose wires, etc?
Does the product meet recognised safety standards and
regulations? How do you know?
What will the product be used for?
How will it be tested to make sure it is suitable?
How could it be improved to make it work better?
Where will it be used?
Are there any maintenance activities needed? These are
things you have to do to keep it working well, like changing
batteries, cleaning it or replacing broken parts
What materials is it made from?
Would different materials work (or look) better?
How was it made?
Why was it made this way?
If it has different parts, how are these joined together?

Do you need to any part Rethink this

design as you make?

What colours are you going to use

and why?

and why?
