Motor Basics
An electric motor is a device using electrical energy to
produce mechanical energy.
Works on the principle of production of mechanical force by
the interaction of an electric current and a magnetic fieldElectromagnetic force (emf).
A typical AC motor consists of two parts:
1). An outside stationary stator having coils supplied with AC
current to produce a rotating magnetic field.
2).An inside rotor attached to the output shaft that is given a
torque by the rotating field.

NEMA A, B, C and D Design

The four NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) designs have unique speedtorque-slip relationships making them suitable to different type of applications:
NEMA design A
a. maximum 5% slip, high to medium starting current
b. normal locked rotor torque, normal breakdown torque
c. suited for a broad variety of applications - as fans and pumps
. NEMA design B
a. maximum 5% slip, low starting current
b. high locked rotor torque, normal breakdown torque
c. suited for a broad variety of applications, normal starting torque - common in HVAC
application with fans, blowers and pumps
. NEMA design C
a. maximum 5% slip, low starting current
b. high locked rotor torque, normal breakdown torque
c. suited for equipment with high inertia starts - as positive displacement pumps
. NEMA design D
a. maximum 5-13% slip, low starting current
b. very high locked rotor torque
c. suited for equipment with very high inertia starts - as cranes, hoists etc.

Motor Duty
S1 Continuous duty The motor works at a constant load for enough time to reach temperature equilibrium.
S2 Short-time duty The motor works at a constant load, but not long enough to reach temperature
equilibrium. The rest periods are long enough for the motor to reach ambient temperature.
S3 Intermittent periodic duty Sequential, identical run and rest cycles with constant load. Temperature
equilibrium is never reached. Starting current has little effect on temperature rise.
S4 Intermittent periodic duty with starting Sequential, identical start, run and rest cycles with constant load.
Temperature equilibrium is not reached, but starting current affects temperature rise.
S5 Intermittent periodic duty with electric braking Sequential, identical cycles of starting, running at constant
load and running with no load. No rest periods.
S6 Continuous operation with intermittent load Sequential, identical cycles of running with constant load and
running with no load. No rest periods.
S7 Continuous operation with electric braking Sequential identical cycles of starting, running at constant load
and electric braking. No rest periods.
S8 Continuous operation with periodic changes in load and speed Sequential, identical duty cycles run at
constant load and given speed, then run at other constant loads and speeds. No rest periods.

Motor Service Factor

The service factor - SF - is a measure of periodically
overload capacity at which a motor can operate
without overload or damage
The NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers
Association) standard service factor for totally
enclosed motors is 1.0.
A motor operating continuously at a service factor
greater than 1 will have a reduced life expectancy
compared to operating at at its rated nameplate
horsepower.

Types of protection Definitions

Type of protection
The specific measures applied to the motor to avoid ignition of a surrounding
atmosphere.

explosive

Pressurized Enclosure p/ Ex p
The explosive gas is prevented from entering the motor by maintaining a protective
gas
at positive pressure inside the motor with respect to the environment. The inside
of the
motor must be purged with a protective gas before the motor is started.

Type of protection Increased Safety e

Additional measures are applied so as to give increased safety against the possibility of
excessive temperatures and of the occurrence of arcs and sparks inside and on external parts
of the motor which do not produce arcs or sparks in normal operation.
Examples of
additional measures are: Larger clearances and creepage distances on
insulating materials,
reduced winding temperature.

Types of protection - Definitions

Type of protection Flameproof Enclosure d
The parts which could ignite the explosive atmosphere, are installed in an enclosure,
which will not be damaged in the case of an internal explosion and also
prevent flame
propagation to the outer explosive atmosphere by the use of spark
preventing flame gaps.

Type of protection non sparking n/ Ex n

Type of protection applied to the motor such that, in normal operation and in certain
abnormal conditions specified by this standard, it is not capable of igniting a
surrounding
explosive atmosphere.

Types of Enclosures
ODP (Open Drip Proof)
Cooling air flows inside motor directly from the outside using fans built inside the motor. Water dripping at up
to a 15 degree angle from vertical will not enter the motor. Suitable for most indoor or protected areas which
have relatively clean environments.
TEFC (Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled)
This enclosure type has an external fan which blows air across the motor frame's external cooling fins. The air
inside the motor recirculates and is cooled by heat transfer through the frame.
TEAAC (Totally Enclosed Air to Air Cooled)
This enclosure type has an external fan which blows air through heat exchanger tubes in the motor frame. The
air inside the motor re-circulates and is cooled by heat transfer through the heat exchanger tubes.
TEWAC (Totally Enclosed Water to Air Cooled)
This enclosure type uses cooling water running through a heat exchanger (much like the radiator in a car) to
take heat away from the air circulating inside the motor. This enclosure type is commonly used on larger
motors.
XP (Explosion Proof)
Explosion-proof motors are intended for use in hazardous locations, which are classified according to the nature
the hazard.
