INTRODUCTION

PROJECT
LOON
Balloon Powered Internet for
everyone

Project Loon Is a research and

development project being
developed by Google with the
mission of providing internet
all over the world via ring of
Balloons Floating in the sky,
about 20 kilometer above the
Ground.

Why Project Loon?

Many of us think of the internet as the global
community .
But two-third of the world s population does
not yet have the internet access

History
Unofficially the project began in 2011 under incubation in
Google X with a series of trial runs in Californias Central
Valley. The project was officially announced as a Google
project on 14 June 2013

Technical
Details
Project Loon balloons float in the stratosphere as twice as
high as airplanes and the weather.
They are carried around the Earth by winds and they can be
steered by rising or descending to an altitude with winds
moving in the desired direction.
The balloon is powered by a array of solar panel.
People connect to the balloon network using a special
internet antenna attached to their building.

Conti..
The signal bounces from balloons to balloons then to the
global internet back on earth.
Stratosphere offers less protection from UV radiation and
dramatic temperature swings ,and air pressure is 1% at the sea
Level.
Project Loon is able to take advantage of the stratospheres
steady winds and remain well above weather events, wildlife
and airplanes.

Design of Project Loon

Solar
Panel
Equipment

Envelop
Made from sheets of polyethylene
plastic.
15m wide and 12m tall when fully
inflated.
Designed with stand High Pressure.
Use parachute.
When a balloon is ready to be taken out
of service, gas is released from the
envelope to bring the balloon down to
Earth in a controlled descent.

descent.
n out of service, gas is released from the
envelope tobring the balloon down to Earth

Solar Panels
Use renewable energy to
power Loons
Solar Array is mounted at
steep angle.
100 w is enough.

Equipment

Box contains
Circuit boards that control the system.
Radio antennas to communicate with
other balloons and with internet
antennas on the ground.
Lithium ion Batteries to store solar
power so the balloons can operate
throughout the night.

How Loon Connects

Each balloon can provide
connectivity to a ground area
about 40 km in diameter at
speeds comparable to 3G.
Three radio transceivers.

balloon-to-balloon
communications.

balloon-to-ground
communication.

third for backup.

The balloons use antennas
equipped with specialized radio
frequency technology.

Conti..
Project Loon currently uses ISM bands that are available
for anyone to use.
Each balloon is equipped with the GPS for tracking its
Location.
The industrial, scientific and medical (ISM)
radio bands .
Radio bands reserved internationally for the
use of radio frequency

Pilot Test

Project Loon start in June 2013.

30 balloons , launched from New Zealands
South Island.
Pilot testers will be used to refine the
technology.

User Connectivity
Users of the service can connect to
the balloon network using a special
Internet antenna
designed and
developed by Google which is
attached to their building.
The signal travels through balloon
network.
After balloon to balloon jumping it
will finally reached to the ground
based station connected to an ISP
then it will be global.

How Does Antenna Receive clear

signals?
Google claims that the loon can deliver speed of 2.0MBps to
7.5MBps
To avoid this cross-polarization issue,2 antenna are placed to receive signals
driving in any direction and making their bandwidth double.

Advantages
Lower cost
Availability of information
Education and health
Use of Renewable Energy
Weather Surveillance

Disadvantages
Hardware Failure
Internet privacy
Not a Replacement of Satellite Communication
Cost
Maintenance

Conclusion
Project Loon is a highly ambitious project and world will
be highly benefited from it.
Project Loon ,an initiative help to fill in those internet gaps
through the use of networked balloons.
The goal is to provide broadband like-internet for twothird of the world that does not have access to a reliable
internet connection by balloons.
It is still in experimental phase.
