Forms and conventions Institutions and potential distribution Audience Technologies Progression Forms and conventions My image of George is set out so that he is just off centre so that I had plenty of space to place text and titles. Also I made the colours black and white so that it would fit in with the colour scheme and gave it a premium finish.
Colour scheme: the main
colours on the cover are red, black and yellow. I chose to use these colours as I decided they would also give a premium feel and they worked well with the black and white picture. Forms and conventions 2 Brand: the list of artists along the side are all in tradition with my magazines style of hip hop. I think the list could have been placed elsewhere because I believe I covered to much of the picture.
Text: the text that says “Win!” stands
out a lot because it is in a large font and it has the two golden tickets next to it. Also I think the use of the yellow circle around the “special edition” worked well because the yellow looked like it was actually in the picture and it was a stand out feature. Form and conventions 3 Brand identity: my magazine is called HipLife because it is not only a magazine about hip hop music but also about the lives of the big stars. It gives the reader an insight into the lives of the rich and famous.
Column inch: this is used to
promote the secondary features on my magazine that are not necessarily the most important. The text follows the standard conventions with the bold red font. Representation > George Perry is the figure that represents the magazine in this issue. His picture gives him a representation of a laid-back, cool guy. Also it shows that he is worried about his image even though he is a wealthy man. He looks like a normal person with normal clothes. This could give him a better image within the public because he looks just like another normal person. The colours of the picture make him fit in with the background of the image and the dark mise-en-scene helps him blend in with the background. Institutions • If my magazine was to be published and distributed around the country then I believe that it would be published by the American company – VIBE. Vibe is a music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones. The publication predominantly R&B and Hip-Hop artists, actors and other entertainers. Issued quarterly, the magazine's target demographic is predominantly young, urban followers of hip-hop culture. It is now part of the LP brand. They are an established brand that started back in 1993 and are a big name in the music magazine industry. After being closed down in 2009 they have now have been bought by LP who want to give it a revamp. • I believe that my magazine would fit with this institution because it is a hip hop magazine like theirs but would be more suited to the British market. Also it looks more at the lives of the stars rather than the their music. Audience • I believe that my HipLife magazine would appeal to 2 target audiences: • Primary Audiences – my magazine would appeal to young professional adults as they would need a disposable income to be able to afford it (£1.99). These people would also be able to afford CD’s and Gig tickets that are available to access in the magazine.
• Secondary Audiences – the secondary audience for my magazine
would probably be young teenagers. They would be able to relate more to the features but wouldn’t necessarily have a disposable income. Although they could be bought a subscription as a present for example. It is a large market to focus on. Addressing the Audience Primary audience – A price that denotes quality. New and current hip-hop artists. Exclusive issues (special editions) Reviews of the latest products. Competitions. Secondary Audience – Subscriptions especially for students. an online version of the magazine making it easily available for young people.
